I removed the hood insulation and heavily insulated big engine cover to reduce under hood heat entrapment in hopes of reducing degradation of various gaskets, hoses, fittings, plastics, and wiring, especially within the cylinder head area.

As noted earlier, the M2/3/4 cars don't come with the hood insulation so there really is not risk to the hood paint. Also, the S55 equipped M2/3/4 have a very very tiny engine cover that only covers the front half of valve cover. The primary purpose of the heavily insulated engine cover on the N55 is to speed the engine warm up process, both on cold start and short drives. This improves efficiency but the downside is it locks in heat, which over time, degrades components. The cover also reduces injector noise to some extent.

I notice a little more mechanical noise with all these insulating components removed under heavy acceleration. At all other times, I notice no real perceivable difference in sound.
do you have any photos of your E39 5 series cover setup?

did you have to modify it any? or does everything line up stock?
