Why are surprised? BMW changed the models names to be like Audi...I will not be surprised if I hear one day the BMW is owned by Audi

I completely agree they're diluting the "M" name (although I love the car), and personally I love that my car is a 335is and not an M335i. It's understated and conveys what it is, I know it's not an M, but it's what a fun BMW should be. It keeps the distinction between M3 and 335, leaves the hollowed Motorsport name untouched, and hints that its not your ordinary 335. In other words, PERFECT for this car, 235is sounds great to me....
I agree--I am not sure why they didn't do this from the get go...they had already established the naming convention with the 335/135is models (perhaps there are historical references of which I am not aware??), and the M_35 came after.

Seems a little weird to me...unless the whole point was to be able to charge closer to ///M $$$ for less than ///M performance...

Sorry, slanted grilles totally ruins the front fascia, it works well on the 6-Series but BMW should've retained the 3-Series grille where it's slightly slanted on the outside.

Car looks a lot better in these pics than in those of the leaked pics few months ago - headlights look totally different.

Here's a history lesson for you. This was back in the 80s btw:

The M535i was introduced as a sporty version of the regular 535i, although the M535i does not feature any unique BMW Motorsport-designed drivetrain components it is, however, equipped with an M-Technic suspension, wheels and body panels not found on the standard 535i. Combined, these items distinguish the M535i from the regular 535i. The E28 M535i was introduced at the 1984 Paris Auto Salon. Unlike the hand-built E28 M5, the E28 M535i was assembled on the standard E28 assembly line in Dingolfing, outside of Munich. An additional batch of cars was built at BMW's Rosslyn, South Africa factory using Complete Knock-Down kits supplied from Germany. BMW did not import the E28 M535i to North America for two reasons: 1# the M brand had not yet been established in North America at the time and thus held little equity with the consumer and 2# the cost of adapting the M-Technic body panels to fit the contours of the government-mandated bumpers was highly prohibitive. Instead, BMW of North America created the 535is, essentially a standard 535i equipped with front and rear spoilers, sport suspension and sport seats, which was sold exclusively in the U.S. and Canada. Total M535i production: 10335 cars

I couldn't care less what the name is to be honest. If it bothers people that much, debadge and carry on. Just my humble opinion.

It's a badge, if you don't like it just pry it out alright?

Still no leaks from press early testings though. For a car that's supposed to hit the dealership in very few months this is unusual/scary?

loving how the headlights aren't connected to the kidney grills... wasn't too excited about the new 3 and 4 series because of that.

This ^.

It started with the first generation 5 series (E12), which was available in 'Motorsport Limited Edition' versions, then as an M535i version. So that's 33+ years ago.

The iS badge, doesn't date back quite as far, and where the Mxxx has only been used so far on the most power versions of a car available, the iS badge has been used on E30 318's, 320's and 325's, as well as the E36 318iS (and possibly the 328i Sport (although I don't think that's actually been officially called the 328iS at all).

I'm down with it being Mxxx or xxxiS, doesn't bother me either way.

Honestly, I don't know what all the rave is about. It looks ok. Kinda horrible from the side actually - sorta like a stretched first generation Hyundai Tiburon. The front is stubby, with weird looking headlights and oversized grille. Specs sound good, but looks? I don't feel it at all. Sad...BMW used to make beautiful cars.

Good grief, there's an X5M, put the M badge on whatever you like. The US S52, the 1M, engines derived from production motors, the E34 M5 was the last hand built M car, if you're just now figuring out that M is not that special, you're really late to the party. Put a size 256 font M on it, I don't care. If it's fun to drive that's really all that should matter.

Judging by those pics, i know this car has been anticipated much but its ugly. Seems like the front, middle and rear were done without looking at the car as a whole. Lines dont seem to flow as one car as with the 1 series. Just my 2 cents.

The photos are truly awful. I can't see how one can get any sense of what the car really looks like from them.

You are referencing the E28 version -- don't forget the previous generation E12 version also had an M535i version.

Not to mention, the M635Csi which just had a plain ///M badge on both the grill and the trunk IIRC.

So one could argue that BMW is not diluting their "hollowed Motorsport name", they are just going back to their roots.

Looks good! I have always though the 1er was a great looking car, it always makes me smile to see one on the road, one of my favorite BMWs. Hoping this new 2er will make an appearance at the upcoming LA auto show.

Yes, the 2 Series debuts at Detroit, together with the M3 and M4.
