2018 F15 X5 or 2019 G01 X3?

Hi Guys,

I’m new here and could use some advice. I’m currently leasing a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee High Altitude and I’m looking to get out of the lease early buy doing a dealer buyout. The dealer buyout price is $33,914 and KBB value is around $31/32K. I was at the BMW dealer yesterday and they had some BMW loaner 2018 X5’s for really good deals but they have 3-5k miles on them. I like the size of my Jeep and don’t want to go to something too much smaller in length. So should I take a chance on a 2018 X5 or look into a 2019 X3 that’s smaller but brand new? The prices were similar around mid $640/month with $2000 down.
Thanks

I've had two 2017 Grand Cherokee Limiteds as rentals recently and must say I was impressed by how smooth they were. Definitely smaller than an X5.

Did you drive them? There is a huge difference between an X5 and an X3. I have driven a few of both and don't think I would ever own an X3...

As a previous E53 4.8is owner, who's never driven any other X series (and am thus remarkably unqualified to offer an opinion) I have the following advice: Get the X5.

The equipment level in an X5 is second to none. The comfort is second to none. The performance I experienced my 10-year-old X5 was unbelievable.

The strongest memory I have of my X5 was how it shrank around you when you were on the road. Getting into it felt like sinking into La-z-boy recliner inside an armored truck; but once you were behind the wheel it accelerated, stopped and steered like a Subaru WRX.

A X5 isn't a big car: Not by today's standards. I can't think of any situation where I'd prefer to be driving in a X3 or X1 rather than an X5.

You get a small X-series because you couldn't afford a X5, or your other half made you compromise.

There's a good argument to be made asserting the supremacy of a M3 or a 1M over a M5 because of its small size and handling - but I don't believe that argument holds in the world of SUV's.

If you buy the X3 I recon' there'll be regular occasions when you'll think to yourself "damnit, I wish I got the X5." ... I really doubt the reverse will be true.

The new G05 X5 has a lot of issues and PuMA measures for it, I would wait for a little to get one as BMW needs time to sort out all the issues both mechanically and software wise. G01 X3, on the other hand, is a great car to have, as it is spacious and has good amenities inside and out. My dad though me anything new to market=glitches.

I’d stay away from loaner cars...these get beat on like crazy. Lots of choices beyond the loaners IMHO. To answer your question, I’d go X5 if you can swing it.

Coming from a 2015 X5 and now in an X4 M40i, I'd have to say that (assuming you're talking about an X3 M40i), I'd choose the X3 without a hesitation. AFAIK, the X5 6 cyl, gets you 300ponies, while the M40i pumps that up to 355. Also the I-drive was really improved in the 2018/19 X3's, but not on the 2018 X5's. BIG difference in performance IMHO.

Of course, if you really need the larger cargo space, then it's a no-brainer, but even then I'd hold out for a 2019 X5.

If you're looking at the X3 M40i compared to an X5 that was a loaner, I'd say the X3, which is a fantastic car. If it's an X3 30i, it's still good, but will depend on whether it has everything you want options-wise. If they have comparable X5's that weren't loaners, of you're comparing an older X5 to the X3 30i, it'll depend on which one has what you're looking for in terms of options, performance, tech, etc.

Or because you want a smaller vehicle, not a huge beast... as compared to my X1

When I was looking at BMW for an SUV, I thought I would get a new 2018 X5. But when I saw the new interior on the 2018 X3, it made the interior on the 2018 X5 look archaic. After a test ride, I wound up getting an X3 M40i, and haven't regretted it once.

One thing to think about - we have an X1 and wanted a little more space. After looking at the interior legroom specs of the X3, it's basically the same as the X1. Only difference is the cargo area space. The X3 is significantly smaller than the X5.

Went to the dealer tonight to get some numbers. Off top I have a trade with $2914 negative equity. They have an advertisement that states $635/month with $2k down and sale price is $58085. Tonight he said he was giving me $10k on MSRP $63835 and quoted me a payment of $699 with $3k down $4261 total due at signing. I’m confused cuz I’m thinking with the advertisement deal with my negative equity it would be about $732/month with the same $2k down. So if they are selling it to me for another $5k off the sale price wouldn’t it be somewhere in the $570/month range?

The reverse is true in my case. I swapped my X5 M50d for an X3 M40i, and don’t regret my decision at all, and that was nearly 6 months ago. The M40i is much quicker, more fun to drive, handles much better, and has nearly the same amount of luggage space.

Yes, the interior on the X5 was more luxurious, but the tech in the X3 is much better. And besides, I’m spending all my time having fun wringing this things neck having fun, to be looking around the interior of the car!

What was your deal if you don't mind sharing?

This the best quote I've gotten so far on an 18 X5 Loaner or New. This one is new. I feel like this is kind of high considering the Due at signing amount. I live in Wisconsin and this is an Illinois dealer.

Looks a bit high to me as well. I expect while some dealers are discounting, are not discounting as deeply as others. You could push back and attempt to negotiate further discount; however, as inventory of 2018 dwindles, may need to compromise on options/color combinations you want with what is left available (locally or out of state).

The G01 X3 is both longer and wider than an E53 X5, with a longer wheelbase.

Oh ugh, don't roll your negative equity into the new lease! That's affecting your payment at least as much as anything.
