228i exhaust sound question
Does the 228i have any type of sound played through the speakers or channeled into the cabin? And does it have a exhaust flap that you can unplgud/disconnect to add any worthwhile engine note?

As far as know, we all have active sound through the speakers. Not sure about the exhaust flaps, but you can do what I'm planning to do and put the m235i exhaust on the car.

I haven't done the exhaust flap mod. As for what it does, well at a certain rpm or if set in sport or sport + mode the flap open to allow more exhaust to flow through the muffler and as a result the exhaust sound gets a little louder. As for my car, it just got dropped off in Halifax yesterday. I believe that our cars were ship mates on the Faust. Anyhow, use the search for the exhaust flap mod on here or on the F30 forum.

One of the top mods/hacks I'm looking forward to, once my car is built and delivered, is the Active Sound Design system. I'm one of those who embraces this technology and the idea in general. I am probably in the minority with this.
The idea occurred to me way before BMW introduced it, and remember a couple of startup companies about 10 years ago who promised to build aftermarket engine sound simulation, but they all turned out to be vaporware. While real exhausts are great, there is something about creating a sound inside the cabin that is tuned to your preferences and could even be changed at the touch of a button. I grew up playing video games, so I think that's where my inspiration is coming from. I would love to be able to reverse engineer BMW's ASD system and modify the sound. Especially in a 4 cylinder, like the 228i, that may not have the most exciting natural sound, it would be fun to occasionally switch to a V12 Ferrari sound or a burbling muscle V8. I'm the only one to hear it, so why not? |
