The glass does not have to come out. Just get a plastic pry tool and start on one corner and work your way around. I removed mine in like 2 minutes each. It's very simple and you don't have to remove the mirror.

Is there a risk to damage the cap? I also bought the pry tools, is there a specific one that you use? Is it difficult?

https://autoid.uk.com/products/autoi...covers-for-bmw I took my mirrors off and it was pretty straightforward, but a bit daunting given the loud 'snap' sound it makes coming off. All I'd add is to wind your windows down first, so you can perch the mirrors on the window sill. This way they don't fall off and dangle by the heating wires.
