I have been seeing people mention for year or so, that BMW is becoming the German Toyota. Now I actually think they might be on to something.

Thoughts:

Looks way better from the rear than the front, but I think they did about as good of a job as possible styling this type of body configuration.

Nice job on the interior... Especially at this (expectedly) low price point.

Could that object in the headliner at the rear be the center passenger's seat belt?

WAY more cargo utility than an X1 or X3. Good job retaining width in the cargo area behind the rear axle.

Great call including Active Cruise as an option. This type of vehicle lends itself to the option.

Zero mention on F/R weight distribution. 60/40?

Hopefully this model is successful and brings everybody involved (corporation, dealers, suppliers) loads of profits. This will strengthen the company and probably win some new brand loyalists.

While I think an xDrive 225iAT is perfect for my 70 year old parents or maybe a small family, I wonder if they would appreciate it.

I can't wait to see the M Sport version... Both to see how it looks with body kit and shadowline trim, but also to watch everyone cry about M badges and "diluting the brand." Lol

Allow me to call the shots at BMW and i'd cut the budgets of the i3 and foolish six-figure, pseudo sports car i8 long before the AT. Maybe I'll join the "diluting" bandwagon when BMW starts putting M badges on i cars?

Oh, they do plan on bringing in the A3 Sportback as a hybrid, but who wants that vs. a diesel?
My wife also has an A3 5dr. She's really disappointed about the new A3 not offering a hatch form in the US, and when we were in Italy in October we already saw the new platform A3 (3dr and 5dr) running around
Maybe this "2 active tourer" could be the replacement for her car.

Back on topic, I agree the naming and branding is wrong for this car. And offering M-sport badging on this would be ridiculous. This is not motorsport inspired, motorsport heritage, motorsport anything.

In a few months, the M2 AT will come out. Only you have to drive in reverse gear for rear-wheel drive dynamics. I'm excited! Totally not against BMW philosphy.
BTW, I hope they take off the hoffmeister kink (sorry for the spelling) from this model or at least move it to the front ... Originally that design was meant to signify that the car is rwd.

Hmmm...not in love with the styling on this thing. The slant in the nose seems very awkward in photos, and seems much too steep.

Besides that criticism, there are some details that are very nice. For example, I like the little inset above where the foglight grilles are-makes the "line" details more prominent, which I think will stand out even more with a darker color. Also, the double edge of the kidney grille is kind of cool. I didn't notice it the first time I looked at the photos, but upon closer look, you can see the chrome edge fits into a larger black one.

In my eyes, the interior is really well done. The seats look very comfortable, something that should replace the base/Luxury/Modern line seats in the 3-Series. I am very interested to hear BMW's reasoning for having the leather perforations be on the seat back and headrest, and not on the seat base. The leather and Sensatec everywhere makes this MPV seem very upmarket- The center counsel is a neat new design from BMW, and I think it works fairly well.

I look forward to seeing what the M-Sport line has in store for this vehicle.

Oh, and WHAT THE HECK WAS BMW THINKING naming this a 2-Series? It should have been the 1-Series. To me, it messes with their whole new naming scheme.

Ha, that's pretty good. They really are doing to have to change their marketing. It would be a mistake to send this to the states. Mercedes started sending their cheap cars over here and their reputation did take a big hit. At least the interior on this looks nice. I just hope it handles really well.

I don't always drive a minivan.

But when I do, it's the BMW ActiveTourer.

( Interior is nice, front looks good, just overall shape is not for me personally )

I don't understand the hate towards this model.

You all sound like BMW will stop making all those great rwd and M cars from now on. This is just an extension of their portfolio.
BMW never offered a similar car so with this they have a real opportunity to snatch some customers who would normally buy a Mercedes B-Class or maybe a Golf Plus.

I also don't get why everyone compares it to a Golf. It is obviously much higher and therefore has to be compared with the Golf Plus (or Golf Sportsvan as it's now called)

I think everyone who thinks BMW lost their minds over this one should reconsider and maybe think a bit harder. This model will increase profit and bring new customers to the brand. It will ensure that in the future they still can build all those great sporty cars that they're know for.
Part of why this car had to come was probably because all automakers are being pushed to bring more economical and efficiant cars to the market.
And if you've got one more in your portfolio, then you don't have a problem building the next M3, M4 or whatever high performance car one'd like.

Seriously chill out people. I think everyone damning the brand over this one car is very narrow minded. Just look at Mercedes for example. With the B-Class and things like the GLK they build some of the most boring old person cars money can buy.
And you know what? They still build those lovely intoxicating AMG cars. It never hurt the brand.
The small models just help ensure that the small production volume cars can still be built and still be made as awesome and mental as we know.
