Car Unlocking and not Auto Locking
I have my Vehicle settings > Door/Lock set to "Lock Automatically" which according to the console is supposed to lock "after a brief time." My car this morning was unlocked and had not yet engaged the Comfort Access. My car was unlocked a couple days ago in my work parking lot. I usually do manually lock it, but we cannot be expected to do this every time in case we forget?
As a test, I left my car unlocked while I went to grab lunch. It was 8 minutes and when I got back to the car, it was still unlocked, no alarm, nothing. I called the BMWAssist and they told me BMW's weren't supposed to autolock as to which I was flabbergasted. Why is there a seeing if it's not designed to autolock? My 230i 2020 is only 2 months old and if it's already having issues, that's not a good sign. 1. Is it supposed to auto lock? 2. What would be the "brief time" that it would lock assuming my fob is out of range or in my RFID protected case? 3. Has anyone else noticed their cars unlocked? 4. If the autolock somehow gets fixed, does the alarm also auto start after a "brief time?" Last edited by luvsql1; 10-11-2019 at 12:45 PM.. |

Auto lock is the vehicle locking the doors once you start moving. I can’t comment on the comfort access side of it but the menu item you are mentioning is for the feature stated above.

There are 2 options. The other option is "lock after starting to drive" so isn't that a separate setting ie lock after you start moving? I have both mine checked.

I can't add an image but the 2 settings are:
Lock automatically (Doors lock automatically after a brief time if no doors are opened) Lock after starting to drive. I have both checked. |

Auto lock will only re-lock the doors IF none of the doors have been opened, so you have locked the car as normal, if the car is then unlocked but no doors are opened it will relock itself(auto lock)
it's a safety thing, it will not auto lock incase someone is inside the car or the keys are left in the car (locked garage) if you have previously locked the car and no doors have been opened it acknowledges that the situation is the same when you locked it and wil relock Hope this explains it |

BMW has had this feature for quite a few years where the doors auto lock when the car reaches a certain speed. My 2001 and 2003 Bimmers had this feature, it was not an option to delete as it is with the current models. The auto lock is speed activated and not time activated.

BMW doesn't have a "walk away lock" / automatic locking while parked feature. It sounds like that's what OP interpreted this feature is. The BMW auto lock feature is only after you start driving and hit a certain speed, and is on all BMWs, .
I know some Mazda6 GT's had a walk away lock feature, the newest Hondas, and Teslas, for instance. In my experience, these features are not 100% - other forum members said the same since the car uses a certain set of triggers. https://www.mazda6club.com/threads/w...-locks.301345/ https://www.mazda6club.com/threads/w...istent.436548/ |

I have never owned a car with this purported 'walk away autolock' function.
Nor have I ever felt a need for such a thing. But maybe I could get used to it. You never know! |
