Buying a Used 2016 Vert - Anything to Watch Out For?
Hi all,
Looking to trade my M3 for a new X2 M35i and a used M235i convertible combo. This will, in my opinion, be a better solution than using one car for everything. I love my M3, but I miss the sun in my hair and need an auto car for the other half. Anyway, as I think about picking this car up, I wanted to see what your thoughts were on the M235i vert. Anything to watch out for? My local has a certified one which I think will help with piece of mind. Yes, I did try searching but usually gremlins pop up as cars age so not sure if anything new or interesting has developed. Thanks! |

If it's not certified, in addition to the usual stuff make sure you put the top up and down while standing outside the car. Look in between the layers of fabric to make sure the cables are in good shape. A couple of mine frayed, don't think cheap but mine was replaced under warranty. Believe pretty common issue.

Check the screen washers work OK. As you probably know from the forum, mixing BMW and non-BMW screenwash can cause expensive-to-rectify 'gunking' of the reservoir, pump and pipes.
Ask for evidence for the 2016-17 recall to replace the roof tensioning cables. Mine were done as part of a service and it's documented on the service paperwork. But other owners just had to take the car in for this specific warranty work. If the owner says they never got a recall notice (possible - not clear exactly which production dates were affected) or can't find the paperwork, get the VIN and check with the dealer's service dept. If they haven't had it serviced at a certified dealer during the initial warranty period, then this should raise the usual concerns.

Just my experience, but my 2016 M235i vert with 6 spd MT has been trouble free for 41K commuter and highway miles. While I have had other "fun to drive" cars and other "reliable" cars, it's been the best combination of both for me.

My roof started making a slight high pitched noise at the point of opening or closing (in third year of ownership).
Normal noise in between. Not easy to hear but my dealer changed the roof pump/motor unit under warranty. I believe these cost in the order of £600 here in the UK. |

Have the car undergo a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) performed by a reputable indie shop that specializes in bimmers. Have the shop write down each issue and the cost to fix each issue. Try www.bimrs.org to find a shop in your area.
