What happened to oil?

So it seems like not that long ago a trip down the oil isle at Walmart yielded a couple of choices of LL-01 oil and I could even find LL-04 for my wife's 328d. All these were in the mid-$20s for the 5 quart jugs. Today I went looking for oil for a recent addition to the garage (another diesel) and I find none of the LL-xx oils on the shelf. When I got home I did a web search. Walmart.com still had nothing although they did have the Castrol diesel oil that I needed, just no LL-xx oils. Expanding my search further I did find a few choices but at prices near double what I was used to paying. What happened? All the oils with "Euro" on the label have disappeared.

You drive a BMW and you're worried about finding cheap oil at WalMart? Buy Liqui Moly at FCP Euro. It's excellent oil and it's still not overly expensive.

If you ask ten mechanics their choice of motor oil, you'll get ten educated answers! I am on BMW number four and have been using Mobil 1 0W-40 for many years: no issues and when I replace the valve cover gaskets, the inside looks nice and clean.
"Mobil Super Synthetic Euro 5W-40 oil is classified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) as API SN. This claim is backward compatible with earlier performance levels such as API SM, SL and SJ."

The LL-01 certification is no longer useful and BMW is dropping the cert. Castrol and Mobil 1 do not list it any more. It is all shrouded in secrecy and speculation. Either use BMW oil which is still LL-01. I put the BMW twin power turbo 0w-30 oil in my M235 while under warranty. Alternatively, I would use either Castrol 0w-40 or Mobil 1 0w-40, both of which carry all other relevant certifications for Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, VW/Audi etc. Those oils are definitely still good and up to the task. Don't lose any sleep over it.

Trying to decide what oil for M235i 2016

I am an hour from BMW dealer so would like to find a other brand that fits the bill ?

I am new to BMW ownership and don't see why an oil the is certified by other performance European cars isn't ok for this Bimmer ?

So Is it a big deal or is the standard Mobil 1 going to keep my car from total engine failure ?

If the oil was OK for your car in 2016 it's OK now. Many BMW dealers offer internet sales (some even have Amazon & eBay stores) so you can have it sent directly to you.

I am in the F22 (N20 - 18K miles) - it's not much more than non-dealer oil, and provides some peace of mind.
I run Castrol Edge Euro 0W-40 in the E39 & E46s.

It is a big insurance policy you get for that increased price, while under warranty. In the very unlikely event of something catastrophic taking out your engine, one of the first steps is they check the oil, and if it isn't BMW oil then you have voided your warranty and get to pay for the motor (same for the filter, etc.).
