Fuel smell in garage after driving mt M240i
I have been noticing a somewhat strong smell of fuel in my garage after driving my M240i and it sitting in an enclosed garage. My car has 48k miles and is completely stock other than a MPE. Is this in any way normal or is this something I should take it to the dealer to look at? If I open the hood I don't notice any strong smells from there, it's just a general odor like if you left a gas cap opened in an enclosed garage (which I have not done).

had you ever overfilled your gas tank, as in once the nozzle clicked off you pulled the nozzle out a bit and continued to add more fuel ?
It use to be with emission charcoal canister fume recycling if you overfilled tank and saturated the canister you'd get that strong fuel odor. But I don't know how or if newer cars emissions have changed. |

I did fill up yesterday but I didn’t “overfill” but this does make sense that it could be the issue. I’ll sniff around the rear fender and see if the odor is stronger there.

UPDATE - so I finally traced down the fuel smell to the driver’s side of the engine. I had been trying to locate it at the rear assuming it was the charcoal filter but tonight I smelt it under the front driver’s fender and popped the hood. I haven’t driven the car since yesterday. Guess I need to schedule a visit to the dealer.

UPDATE - So the service tech found that I had a bulging and leaking fuel line and advised me the car should not be driven. On top of that, the parts needed to repair the car are having to come from Germany and might take up to 2 weeks.
The good news is my car is under warranty and now have a brand new 2020 330i to drive for the time my car is in service. |
