Is a wider rim always better for RE71s on a stock suspension m235i?
I am a newbie just finished my first autocross season on 225/45/17s and am will get new wheels for next year. I'd like to run 245/40/17s. Does rim width make a big difference. what rim width and ET should I buy? Thanks guys.

Yes, it makes a difference. You want as much tread width as possible on the pavement.
17X9 is the wheel size I would recommend for a tire with the 8.6" tread width of the 245/40-17 RE-71R. Someone else will have to chime-in regarding offset(s).

Ideally, you want to run slightly wider wheels than the tire so you get a slight stretch for maximum contact patch and less sidewall squirm. Simply bumping up the tire size without taking wheel into consideration is not smart. That said, seat time is always more valuable than anything else so if you've no funds for wheel upgrades, don't worry too much and focus on getting more practice in.

For what it's worth, I'm running 245/40/17 on 17x8 wheels and am having a ton of fun with it. Stock suspension too. Agree with the other guys that a wider wheel is ideal for this tire width, but I also like having the extra grip over the 225 mm. The stiff sidewalls on the RE71r means tire response is still great.
The reason I did this is so I could get a square setup to rotate my tires easily, since I have an xdrive. https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1485848 |
