Hmm.... 0w20 seems thin for a turbo car unless you live in the Yukons.

Isn't there a sticker on the underside of the hood that says the type? There's one in my m235i?

Agreed! My 235 recommends 30 or 40 and I've been skeptical using the 30.

Sticker under the hood, on the cap, and inside the manual all say 0w-20 in my m240i and my X1. B58 and B46 motors.

Most car manufactures have gone to 0W-20 for better MPG.

My question is .... other than BMW oil, can we get BMW approved oil in that weight? All I've seen is Castrol 0W-40, on the shelves, that has the BMW LL01 certificate.

Sorry to be the bearer of ill news, but Mobil 1 oils run on the thin side. I have a 2001 330Ci and the recommended Mobil 1 oil is 0W40, and not the thinner oils. I recommend you use the dealer 5W30 oil. Btw, I have a 2018 M240i on order. It'll be my 5th BMW, so I have a bit of experience with these cars.

I shipped my car back to the states a couple weeks ago, but for the last 5k miles on it, it's been running mobile 1 without any issues, oil temp runs 225 in winter and 230 in summer, no CEL lights, no lag feel. I might switch to something else at the next oil change since I'll be living in Florida, but for the German winters it did fine #shrug.

I recommend an oil that carries the "BMW LL01" logo. I realize that most of us change our car's oil more frequently than the "recommended" oil change interval, but an oil with the logo is going to be a very good oil. Btw, no Mobil 1 carries the logo!

With all the differences of opinions and recommendations, I decided to let my German dealer decide which oil to use. They recommended 5w-30 and used Castrol Extended Performance specifically. They also said "no way" to 0W-20 when I mentioned the recommendations in the manual for the same reasons others have cited. I feel good about sticking with 5w-30 going forward.

I don't know if it was in my mind or what, but after the oil change I felt like the car was noticeably more responsive in the low end while in Comfort mode. I thought I had accidentally switched to Sport mode without realizing, but I hadn't. Again, could just be placebo effect. IDK.

If you used the Eular service center by Globus, I wouldn't take their word for anything. When they replaced my turbo under warranty, they broke a clip and thought it'd be a good idea to zip tie the connector back on. Took them 6 months to order the right part (first 2 parts were wrong). They told me 5W-30 as well, but their lack or integrity, knowledge and professionalism when repairing my car makes me take anything they say as a joke. Plus I doubt the months and years that went into developing the b58 by very well educated engineers who recommend 0w-20 as the main oil to use isn't for nothing. I understand the arguement for the LL01 vs non certified oils, but different weights is another story. Yes, the manual says you can use 5w-30 depending on the operating environment (such as Canada, Northern Europe, Russia, etc), but here in Ktown where it gets to 15-20F I don't see why a thinner oil like 5w-30 would be necessary.

5W 30 is not thinner than 0W 20...

That's what I use in my N20 228i. I'm tuned and it's hotter than the Devil's butt crack here in SC.

Many oils carry the BMW LL01 logo. Mobil 0W40 used to have it . It no longer carries the logo. As I noted above, stick with an oil with the logo.

When selecting an engine oil, ensure that
the engine oil belongs to one of the viscosity
grades SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40,
and SAE 5W-30 or malfunctions or engine
damage may occur
......

Suitable engine oil types
You can add engine oils that meet the following
oil rating standards:
Gasoline engine
BMW Longlife-01.
BMW Longlife-01 FE.
Further information regarding the oil specifications
and viscosities of engine oils can be inquired
with the service center.
FE means fuel economy, i.e. they're lower viscosity.

Now, don't trust me, go find out here: https://www.bmwusa.com/owners-manuals.html

Enter your VIN, open the pdf and search for 'longlife'
