The only way to be sure a used car won't blow a $20k engine is to get one with an engine that is only worth $10k. Your dad might be better stepping up and buying new, or CPO, if he can't tolerate any uncertainty, because there can't be guarantees about the hardware (even for new), just a way to be sure who will pay for it.
I bet that if you figured the amount he is saving by buying used, it would be pretty close to what a used engine would really cost you (i.e. 7-10k), so you should just decide - pay now for sure, or take a chance and perhaps pay later (or not). Like Clint would say, do you feel lucky.... |

Had a n20 powered car for 3 years. Nothing bad to say about the reliability. If you do the maintenance and take care of it, it should take care of you.

Why not buy extra insurance (warranty) on your investment?
Cars are a pay to play game. Many here have the funds to play the game and can afford to lose. Sounds like if your dad isn't will to spend and extra 2-3k on a good warranty then maybe he should look at new or CPO cars that are in the 36k range. |

BTW this is exactly why I have a CPO 228i and not a m235i.
I didn't want to buy a m235i that would have cost $35k or more with 2-4 times the miles on it, be 2 years older and have little to no warranty left. Ended up with a practically brand new car (4k miles) with a 100k mile maintenance plan for 32k. And a better than new car warranty. I can't afford to have a $30k plus paper weight in my driveway that I'm making payments on. That's why I don't even think about doing any mods that would void my warranty. Of course I want a m235i, but this little n26 motor is more than enough to get in trouble. And I'm extremely happy with my car. |

Both. In certain states with stricter emissions regs like here in CA, the 228i is sold with the N26, which is almost identical to the N20 except for certain aspects of catalyst converter and/or exhaust design that qualify it as a SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) engine which -- I think -- enables BMW to benefit from local tax breaks.

I have a 228i built March of 2014 with the N20. I have driven it since new and now am close to 57K miles of daily driver use. I drive very spirited and have a Stage 1 tune on it. Otherwise it's completely stock. All of the required maintenance has been performed when needed and it's been 99% trouble free. Nothing engine related at all. I have also sent oil samples out to be tested and they came back better than the normal wear so don't let a few instances of N20 problems among the total that have been built discourage you from a great purchase.

Ain't it just like someone who's posted five times to not give any sort of context or proof of such a statement. Explain your statement (and your purported employment at "Sun BMW") or get out. We don't know you. You need to establish credibility with a statement like that.

I have a 2013 X1 with an N20, I looked on Consumer Reports which keeps pretty good records about reliabilty based on consumer feedback and under Engine Major its rated much better than average. The vast majority of X1's had the N20 and ratings 2013-2016 all were much better than average. If there's a big problem no owners know about it.

It's not a fire-breathing track tune. It's plenty aggressive for street driving. Note that I used the word "fairly".
