Grease under hood

Washed my engine bay for the first time. I know I should have done this before 5 years and 70,000 miles but the car gave me no reason to raise the hood.
And staying on paved roads in a green part of the country and parking in a garage just doesn't result in much dirt. The dust was easy but there was tarry grease around the hood latches and at random spots around the hood and fenders. I believe it was applied at the factory. Looks like it was sprayed on by a rabid robot. It was a nice day and with nothing more to do I used dish soap and a tooth brush and have it looking pretty good in half an hour.

Anyone else have this grease issue?

wonder if it's for manufacturing process

or for anti-corrosion

can't imagine it for being any kind of electrical conduction / charging / jump start

Likely Cosmoline. BMW sprays it on certain parts of the car to prevent corrosion.

But it is kind of interesting the locations/spots BMW choose to apply.

Yes, it is cosmoline. BMW puts it in the body panels to prevent corrosion. I get it coming out of the corner of the doors, the trunk and the hood. Rapid Remover is a water based adhesive remover that works well on exterior body panels. Simple Green diluted down works well under the hood and in the engine bay. I use a pump sprayer filled with RO water to wet my engine bay, spray liberally with Simple Green, scrub with brush or wipe with rag as needed and rinse with the RO water.

Ok that makes sense. It was applied to the inner or outer skin of the hood and it's been oozing out thru openings. Typically manufacturers use adhesives and sound deadeners in this space. Corrosion is not normally an issue since ELPO plating was adopted in the 1990's.
