High RPM problem FBO M235i

Does anyone know of this problem? Gunned my car today and it would not go past around 5k rpms and is doing what is shown in the video but no codes were thrown. Any help would be appreciated. Plugs and coils were changed around 11k miles ago and are the NGK plugs. Car is a 2015 M235i x drive with fbo and a bootmod stage 2 91 ots tune (putting 93 octane in car though). Around 62k miles on the car and is pretty well maintained: recently did the differentials and transmission fluid change and regularly do oil every 5k miles. This has happened before like twice but I never really thought much of it cause it goes away but it happened again and im starting to worry.

- Another thing to note is that my car eats oil. Don't know if its cause of the tune or anything (or just cause its an n55) but about every 2 to 3k miles it tells me to add a quart. Had that warning pop up last week but put did an oil change about 2k miles ago adding 5 quarts. Seems a little fishy to me but I thought it was normal given the n55 loves oil and given the fact that im tuned it didn't make me think much of it.

I'm no expert in log reading but I see my fuel pump dipping: https://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5ff2...0b431a1b66c45b

You put 5 quarts in doing the oil change? Or it burnt 5? It shouldn't burn any noticable oil if it's in good health

Yeah when I change the oil I usually put in 6 quarts. Don't know at how low (at what oil capacity) the low oil light comes on though. To me it doesn't seem like it's burning a crap ton of oil and the engine feels pretty healthy for its mileage

it's hard to tell what's happening in the video. it almost looks like the car shifts then you let your foot off the gas? I doubt it based on your description, thought.

eating a qt of oil is pretty bad....sounds like dealer time to me.

In the vid im in 1st gear and the car revs up and stops around 5.5k thats when you hear the backfiring for some reason. Im trying to figure out why. Reflashed today and it seems fine for now though but we will see

Shes supposed to hold 7 quarts, but that doesn't really matter if it's disappearing that quickly. You shouldn't need to add any oil between oil changes.

These cars burn oil when driven hard. 1 qt every 3k miles isn't abnormal if you drive it hard at higher rpms.

Yeah ever since I've tuned the car (around 6 months ago) I've been driving it harder than I did previously so I think thats the culprit. I add 1 qt about every 2 to 3k miles which seems normal to me.

It seems to have gone away and the car is feeling as smooth as ever when I put new gas in and reflashed stage 2 so gas was possibly the problem. Some people on the bm3 enthusiast's group on Facebook said that it had happened to them and that it was gas

Go stock plugs, having the same issue. I'm switching my ngks and pr coils back to stock and back to ots 93. I went so many different ways about it and this is like the second to last option I have

While my problem has seemed to go away I think that changing plugs and coils are a safe bet so I might do that soon as well. Let me know how it goes for you

It fixed my problem 100%. I went back to stock plugs and coils as well as OTS stage 2 93. My guy told me that I could still go with my custom tune so I'm waiting on a map from Cary Jordan right now.

Wow very nice to hear! I'm glad it fixed your problem. Very interesting how changing back to stock plugs and coils fixed your problem. If the problem pops up again I might do that and see if it works. Was also thinking of doing a custom tune as well but I don't think an extra $600 for a tune is worth it unless I was going big turbo.

I got the custom tune before doing this thinking it would help the problem, but many people say it's not worth it unless your running e/race gas

So I assumed the custom tune did not fix the problem? Thats why you went back to stock plugs + coils

Yeah my thoughts exactly. I would do it if ethanol was available where I lived but unfortunately it is not plus I am not trying to fish out around $1600 for a hpfp on top of $600. Also calculating a blend seems like a hassle imo

It didn't fix the problem when I first got it. Now that I have stock plugs and coils, I got a new custom map and my car runs fine

That's good to hear man. Glad it worked out for you. Will have to definitely try that option if it ever becomes a problem again.

Actually, it ran fine with the OTS map. Still having problems (not as much) with the custom map. Also didn't realize my configurations were still set to PR Coils. Going to fix that soon and give some feedback
