N55s have oil sump/ rod bearing issues + bonus Watkins Glen Footage
As many of you know, my m235i sees a decent amount of track miles. I have heard stories from a few different sources that m235s can oil starve during long fast corners while running sticky tires. I have always run "slow" tires for this reason. Even slow tires didn't save my rod bearings.
A month ago my car spun a rod bearing at Watkins Glen. It was the second session of the second day. While accelerating out of the boot (uphill long right) I felt my car buck pretty hard, I came off throttle and heard a very distinct rattling and knew exactly what that meant. My car does have 75k on it, but it's always been maintained properly and had new oil for the Glen. Watkins Glen just seems to be a very tough track on cars and has multiple areas that are a recipe for oil starvation. I think for the most part, m235s should be fine at most tracks with most drivers. I definitely drive my car to almost all of its potential, and at a track like WGI that means it was working very hard. Enjoy this very sloppy, but quick lap from the end of the first session. My tires were at about 42psi, but the bearing spun the next session, so this is all I got. I do plan on adding f8x sump and pan before it sees track miles again.

How many track events (or sessions) roughly? Did you always keep your oil level at max or a little over? Any oil analysis to suggest accelerated wear?
I would say I'm definitely getting a lot out of the car from a driver's perspective and I'm getting more nervous the more oil starve cases pop up. Ran re71r last year and planning Hankook RS4 next year, for cost, better wear and reducing risk of oil starve potentially. What do you consider as a slow tire? |

My oil was always at "max". I never did oil analysis because my car was under warranty. If it came back indicating excessive wear I'm not sure what I would've done as I don't think the dealer would value that as a reason to do anything for me. I was running Falken rt615ks. It has been my tire of choice for awhile because they are cheap and last forever.

New member here, I'm just getting ready to order a M240i coupe. I intend to eventually do some autocross and HPDE track events and I'm wondering if the B58 engine has any history of similar oil starvation issues as reported with the N55 engine? Thanks.

Based on all info I'm aware of b58s don't have any issues. I'm pretty sure m240ir don't have a different oil sump from the street car, but that would be a good thing to know.

But yes, as far as I know, the B58 in the street car doesn't have starvation problems. https://www.bimmerworld.com/Engine/B...137854463.html |

one of my favorite tracks. I spent most of my childhood in the infield and pits while my father raced Datsun 510s in the 70s and formula fords in the 80s what a great track.

I believe the point of ultimate failure was braking+acceleration out of the boot. That is a hard braking section and then there is a ton of load accelerating up the hill.
N55s are known to lose the most oil pressure under braking.

FWIW, in terms of g-forces the braking zone into the Toe was the hardest-braking zone in my race car. I've never gone back to take a really hard look at max g-force data in the turns at the Glen, except to notice that it could move up and down quite in a tenth of a second and tapping a steep curb could create a value that had no meaning. I was surprised the first time I looked at the data and saw that max longitudinal g-forces occurred braking for the Toe, because the braking and turn-in were helped so much by the steepness of the Toe that the transition wasn't much of an event. After thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that it was the steepness of the straight between T6 and the Toe that created the maximal g-forces. Without any hard data available, the Carousel was my principal concern with my B58 – both for certain fuel starvation below ½-tank and for possible oil starvation.
