Agreed. The market has an obsession with wheel size, the thinking being the bigger the better. WT? Purely cosmetic. And you can say the same about carbon trim.

It's all about the show not the go.

To me, you are just looking at this the wrong way. M2 is really a M4 Pure Edition with a less sophisticated engine. 2 series is based on a shortened 3 series chassis. So with all the suspension brakes diff gearbox etc, it's really a short wheel base M3 with a slightly weaker engine. RS3, A45 are based on A3 and A class chassis. Not in the same league IMHO. RS3 is not related to RS4 at all. Even the Quattro is fake. Similarly A45 has nothing to do with C63 aside from the seats. So would you rather a stripped down M4 or a tarted up A class and A3? That's the buyer's choice of course but to me the M2 is a bargain as a driver oriented car. Really, RS3 and A45 are very expensive relative to S3 and A250 sports.

In terms of the price relative to M3/4, you are comparing the price of a coupe to a sedan, and the discounted price relative to the potential list price. Not exactly a fair comparison. M4 is $149k list, so if M2 is $99k, then you're getting a M4 pure edition at a bargain. If you can get such a big discount on M3/4, then you should be able to get it for M2 as well. And if you think the gap is too small to a M3 and you can afford to pay for the extra $25-30k, then go buy a M3. That is the point of it. Different market segments for different people.
haha wayne, we don't always share same view but fully agree with you here there are some really unrealistic expectations on what M2 should be, US EU and AU. unlike you, i was a sucker and had followed a lot of the nonsense, mostly on the quiet.

i said it before, the M2 may be the catalyst this 2Addicts Oz forum needs. It's been pretty inactive most of the time but that said, those who comes along to contribute have been great. The M2 may bring a larger group of previous 1er owners from 1Addicts who have had plenty of mod experience and ready to start again with another small bimmer, provided they have not already moved onto M3/M4 or better things with other marques.

A small coupe with M3 mechanical goodies that will drive almost as well as a M3, and possibly more nimble. For what it's worth, I noted the following ommision relative to the M3/4:

Carbon roof
CRFP boot lid (for M4)
.............

There may be others but I can't think of them now. I am still keen on the M2 even though I have M3 and M4. I think it's just a nicer size car.
IIRC there are also other CFRP structural cross members in the roof and engine compartment? Drive shaft also CFRP. IMO use of CFRP in these areas including roof boot etc contribute to the nominal weight difference between M2/M4 say. There must be other contributing factors.

Yes of course, there is the beautiful boomerang shaped CF chassis brace in the engine bay, and the CF drive shaft.

M2 price will have to be sharp as M3's are insanely good cars for the money

The M4 boomerang brace is very unusual design. Normal design would require bracing elements to be straight sections. Elastic modulus of CF being limited, I have to question how much it really adds the bracing, and how much is it just there for eye candy. TBH, I suspect the latter of the two.

I'm not sure if I'm totally convinced with the M2. I mean it does look good. But I don't think it's as "flairy" as I hoped.

I think the car is a little "restricted" in terms of development, I'm sure designers, engineers etc. were constantly reminded not to "beat the M3/M4"

Interior is probably the most disappointing, all they did was put the M logo on all 4 seats, blue stitching and a little bit of alcantara on the doors. The carbon trims are very similar to the M performance ones (I actually prefer the alcantara).

Bonnet, roof and boot remains the same. Only 60mm and 100mm wider front and rear respectively.

Engine is debatable, I think the current engine is good, and an extra 40 odd HP is also good but is that enough? (in saying that M cars have never really been about the engine).

The chassis is what I think most people will buy the car for, it's reconstructed from the already very good 2 chassis.

I really think small things like the carbon spoiler, alcantara steering wheel, basically all the m performance bits should be standard.

Anyways, it's unlikely I'll switch from the M235i to M2. As the difference is not too big. But if I didn't drive a M235i already, the predicted driveaway prize of $120k+ is a bit steep, I think I'd go closer towards the M3/M4 instead.

I like it. A lot. I couldn't give 2 f's about the interior difference or otherwise. They have made some important changes to the suspension and engine. Understandable they have detuned it a little so as to not p$$$ off the more expensive M owners, and this is easily remedied.

Price is around $100,000 according to this article - http://www.motoring.com.au/news/2015...2-m4-gts-54656

Not sure how accurate it is though.

M4 GTS is $250,000

$100k For the base price... I'm a little surprised at the 100k pricetag considering back in 2011-12 Aussie dollar was so strong and now it's so weak! I really thought car prices would go up

I was told 116k-120k, which is pretty specific. And asked if I wanted to put an expression of interest down. I would get crucified having only been in the 235i for a few months....nonetheless......
