Strange Cold Starts, BMS Intake?

I noticed that for the second time I got a strange/rough cold start. The revs start normal then drop below 1k (it feels like the car is getting bogged down) and rev back to normal after a second or two. This happened to me for the first time exactly a week ago and I find it strange that it doesn't happen consistently.

My only mods are the BMS Intake and BMS Stage 1 Tune, pretty easy setup and never had a CEL. I have a feeling the intake might be the culprit, the Stage1 may not be tuning out the intake which could make the car run lean. Also I'm told MAFs sensors are picky with intakes on our cars.

Has this happened anyone? Hoping to hear from others before I take the time to remove my intake, which I really prefer to keep in the car.

Thanks!

Yep it happened to me ... removed the intake and never happened again. That said I removed the JB4 at the same time so it was either one of them

The bms intake did it for me as well. Not only that the bog down and lurch back up to normal would happen when slowing down and coming to a stop which really bothered me. My intake also caused a CEL. I removed the intake and it also stopped happening for me. Kept my jb4 since i have er catless dp as well and those have been fine. Damn do i miss that swoosh! Anyone have any correction methods for this intake problem? Do we think the afe intake would result in the same issues?

I have the AFE intake with a stage 1 and haven't had these issues at all. I've run them both for over 3,000 miles so far. I've seen this issue come up a lot with the BMS intake, which is why I decided to go with the AFE.

I've had similar issues. Car ran great on map 1 with no issues. I installed the BMS intake and ER catless DP, went to map 2 and have had several engine stumbling, lag and surging issues. Going back to map 1 did not correct it. Looks like I'll be taking the intake off and see if it helps.

I can answer this, it is the BMS intake.

Exact same thing happened to me. Installed the intake, everything was fine for months until the weather got colder. Then I would have all sorts of hesitation, bogging, lurching issues on cold start that would go away within a few mins (still very annoying).

This was without my BMS Stage 1 tune that I later installed. The Tune cannot be the issue as it doesn't 'turn on' until the engine is warmed up anyway so when your vehicle starts, it's just the stock ECU its looking at for input.

The solution? Swap the stock airbox back for winter. Not ideal but it solved the problem right away. Taking the car in tomorrow for its first service and will subsequently put my BMS Stage 1 tune and intake back on the car right afterwards.

Sorry to hear that.
Did you guys contact Burger Tuning to make them aware if this issue?

Yes. Not much they can do about it. Only affects colder climates so it's hard for them to develop for that.

Mike, OT but can you order that new Forge BOV for the M235i? Part # is FMDVF22A.

I can only find it overseas and they won't ship to North America.

Ugh! I have a new BMS intake sitting in the box ready to install on my 235, and my climate is definitely what you would describe as cold for much of the year.

I guess I will have to decide whether or not it is worth swapping intakes twice a year...

It's still definitely worth it. Swapping literally takes 9 minutes and that includes removing my BMS Stage 1 tune as well as it's going in for its first dealer visit tomorrow.

If it were a hassle, I would be more upset but it's not like I have the windows open in the winter here anyway so it's not that big of a deal.

My car still would throw a cel and hve the bogging issues even after hours of driving it with the intake and the car being warm. The moment i took it off the car felt better, and i have not experienced the issues...will swap it when its warm but i dont think the climate is the real issue, at least for me...

For the record, I have never had the car throw a CEL, go into limp mode or actually stall.

Hmm my concern with the Burger intake was that it is open box compared to the stock which is a closed box. Which AFE intake are you guys using ?

I had this only once in 4k miles. It just sounded like the car was struggling at cold start but it became normal after like 15 seconds. It's most definitely the intake.. Something with the MAF sensor?

Man it's driving me nuts how everyone symptoms are all slightly different haha. For myself, my car never stalled out or threw a cel. And I only have issues on cold starts. My intake has about 5k miles on it.

The intake moves a lot more air and the MAF sensor is very sensitive to airflow at low idle speeds. There is a post in the n54tech support section showing how to place spacers in the MAF to adjust it for those few cars who have this issue.

This is a half baked solution to the issue tho in my opinion ..... the product if released to the market should work and should not cause issues. Pretty sure its out of production now ? Correct Mike ?

Is this the only intake that is having issues?

Interesting thread. I just started my car an hour ago cold and it had a rough idle. It went away after giving slight throttle in reverse leaving the garage. I only have the BMS intake and JB4 installed...but won't diagnose until further symptoms emerge. Always could be operator install error.

So far am enjoying the extra power on map 5 and wife says car runs like stock.

Will report back if symptoms persist.
