This post is covered else where for the 228i to 235i exhaust, but this is slightly different. I couldn't find anyone else who had tried on the newer LCI models, so I decided to give it a shot. I picked up a performance diffuser online and had it painted locally. For the exhaust I went with the M240i free flow Dinan exhaust.

I have a local tech, Bavarian Motor works out of Enterprise, AL, who's absolutely fantastic with my car. I trust him more than I trust myself, so it was an easy choice to have him do the install.

Where this mod differed from what I read about the 228 to 235 swap, was the piping. Previously an adapter was needed go from 75mm to 80mm stepping up to the 235 muffler piping. On the LCI the piping is the same diameter for both the 230 and 240. This mean the exhaust is completely interchangeable so long as you also change out the diffuser. The hangers lined up perfectly and the included clamp worked without issue. The only issue I had at all was the exhaust tip on the right side seems to be welded a little crooked, so I'll be needing to get that fixed at an exhaust shop at some point.

The exhaust note is amazing. Deep rumbles at idle, a solid hum under hard acceleration, and near stock silence once you shift to 6th and sustain speed. It's not obnoxious, but you can also finally hear it clearly.

I compared for months between the 230 and 240. Obviously I decided on the 230, but one of the cons that really bugged me was the lack of symmetry with the exhaust. When I decided I wanted to upgrade the exhaust, it made sense to correct that issue while spending the money for the upgrade anyway.

Piping size difference

Hello i am currently in the process of making this upgrade on my 2016 228i, is the difference in pipe size on lci due to 230i pipe size increasing or m240i size decreasing?

Thanks again! this is particularly relevant to me because i have both an m235i and an m240i muffler for sale near me locally and am wondering if i should be choosing one over the other.

The LCI models have the same pipe size at 80mm diameter for both the 230 and 240 models. The pre LCI the 228/230 have 75mm diameter pipes and the 235/240 has 80mm. The thread that I originally came across that I based this mod on was someone using a 228i. The only difference that you will have to do that I didn't, is you will have to get an adapter ordered or locally made to step up from 75-80mm
