Floor Mats

Every set of floor mats I have seen has the same flaw. There is a gap by my right heel that lets crud get below the go pedal. Any solutions?

Follow us and move from Michigan to where there is no crud!

I found a partial solution. During summer, I have the M Performance mats that mostly grab dust and no debris. From fall to spring, I put over them a set of standard F22 fabric mats and they are not attached by any Velcro so they slide closer to the accelerator from going in and out.

Very easy to remove them and shake out the debris.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough, the crud gets under the mat and into the carpet. Loose stuff can be vacuumed but water, dirt and salt are difficult to wash out.

Weathertech seem to be the most highly rated mats, but I've not tried them. I doubt you will find anything that completely solves the problem, as any possible interference with the pedal operation would be a liability issue.

As an alternative, rent a Rug Doctor now and then, the upholstery attachment works great for car carpets . I used to rent one every spring to do carpets in my house and car, but a couple years ago I bought a Bissell Big Green machine so now I can do it anytime.

Because of the bottom hinge design of the throttle, there is no solution to this. Gook will always fall off your shoe as it rubs the pedal and fall into the gap.

I suppose you could use some duct tape and seal the gap between the floor mat and the bottom flange of the throttle. But then you run the risk of some ripped tape jamming into the hinge and making the throttle stick open.

Guess the answer is a throttle hinged from above. I think my old Beetles had that.

I actually prefer a floor hinged accelerator. Maybe it's just me, but it seems to allow for more precise throttle control and less strain on the ankle over longer periods of driving. Not much you can do about the dirt and debris, just have to clean it every once in a while.

BMW's floor liners are made by Weathertech.

That's interesting. I bought Weathertech's aftermarket floor liners once I brought my car home. I had assumed I would do that prior to buying the car.

After seeing the BMW floor liners at home, and after buying the Weathertech aftermarket units, it was clear that the latter were a far superior floor covering. Ironically, perhaps, I don't get in my car with stuff on my shoes, drive in the snow or rain, or otherwise ask much of floor liners. Weathertech units simply are more suitable for their intended purpose, I think.

The BMW floor liners that came in my car struck me as being as cheaply-sourced as the audio components in my $49K car. I'm not particularly concerned with floor liners, but my impression is that BMW "cuts corners" wherever it can. And, speaking practically, why wouldn't it. It was, IIRC, the world's most-profitable car company in both 2016 and 2017. Thinking ahead, without that level of financial result, how else is BMW going to pay for its transition to EV and EV-oriented automobiles.

Mind you, I do not mean to complain. A contemporary 2 Series car benefits quite a bit from the engineering expertise BMW has gained from its more costly models. This is especially true, I think, regarding its M-cars and its race cars. We 2 Series owners may be at the bottom of BMW's food chain, but I still think we're enjoying, by far, the greatest bang-for-the-buck that the marque has to offer.
