My horn sounds like a Buick
Is anyone else not thrilled with the tone of their BMW M240i horn? Do all BMW horns sound like that? I'm inclined to upgrade to a pair of Hella horns to add a bit of a European personality, while still being loud. Anyone else change out their horns?

I haven't used mine, either. I'll have to try it out, if only to make sure it works.

Mine works. Yesterday, I had just pulled in to fill my car when a very large, very old truck started to back up toward me. The driver must not have seen my teeny tiny car through his filthy back window and the truck was too old to have a backup camera. I leaned on the horn for a long while before he reluctantly relented.
Not the first time this has happened to me. That's what horns are for! |

Sometimes even when the horn is used, people just don't register it, or think it is being aimed at someone else.
At the beginning of the Covid epidemic I had just parked my car in a spot at the mall when someone in a Toyota Venza started backing out across the aisle. I thought he was getting a bit close, so hit the horn, but he still kept on coming until he hit the rear bumper left corner with a loud crunching sound and noticeable bump. He looked at the mark on the bumper and claimed it looked like it would cost $50 to fix and refused to give me his drivers licence and insurance details (which is a required exchange of info in Alberta after a collision). I took a photo of his licence plate and videoed him ranting at me about me trying to pull an insurance scam, all the cops he knew and how he wasn't going to give me his details. I completed a police report and uploaded the video to the police website. The cop I talked to said he hadn't returned their calls after a week, but 2 weeks later suddenly his insurance company contacted mine saying he had admitted responsibility. $2000 later the car was returned to as good as new condition. |

I swear the horn in my wife's 230 is different than the horn in my 240. No idea why.
As for usage: I wore the horn out in my Prelude and had to replace it. If I have to use my brakes because you're doing something dumb or generally not thinking about other drivers around you (looking at you a-hole who pulls out in front of me when there isn't a car behind me in sight and then proceeds to take a left turn), I'm going to let you know about it. I have to use my horn a lot.

I used to have a Nautilus motorcycle horn in my Miata. It's a compact, single unit with the compressor and dual air horns. Because of the single unit, there is no delay for the compressor to spin up, like other air horns, so the horns respond immediately. It was a great horn!

Thanks. According to newTIS, my 2015 228ix F23 has the BMW "Fanfare" horn, relay on front power module. It has two horns, one at 4dB and the other at 6 dB. From the wiring diagrams, it appers that a 40amp relay powers the pair.
If I replaced both, it would probably trigger a heart attack, both inside and outside of the car. |
