Pop the glass out and there's 3 tabs behind it that lock them in.

The glass does not have to come out. Just get a plastic pry tool and start on one corner and work your way around. I removed mine in like 2 minutes each. It's very simple and you don't have to remove the mirror.

Is there a risk to damage the cap? I also bought the pry tools, is there a specific one that you use? Is it difficult?

I used a standard interior trim pry tool which can be found all over the place like amazon and ebay. The stiffer the tool, the better so don't cheap out on the $2 tools because they will bend. I paid somewhere around $15 for a full set of heavier duty pry tools.

It's very simple, on a scale of 1-10 I'd say a 3. There might be youtube vids on the subject but once you start your pry, it's pretty obvious what you need to do. If I remember correctly, I started from the lower inside section and worked my way out and up.

There's a video on the following page

I took my mirrors off and it was pretty straightforward, but a bit daunting given the loud 'snap' sound it makes coming off.

All I'd add is to wind your windows down first, so you can perch the mirrors on the window sill. This way they don't fall off and dangle by the heating wires.
