I would normally not care about the alarm, but after my friends 328i was stolen (eventually recovered without any evidence of a break in) it made me realize these cars are much easier to steal than most people realize, so it's $400 well spent.

Did he leave it unlocked with the keys in the ignition?

Pretty difficult to get around the immobilizer...

No, and it's not as hard as you would think.

http://www.networkworld.com/article/...less-bmws.html

The fact that his car was stolen without the glass being broken means thieves obviously aren't having nearly as hard a time as people would think, at least on the non-alarmed cars.

Even in that case they needed to break the window. Again are you sure the door wasn't as least left unlocked...

The fact that your buddies car turned up also indicates that this wasn't a targeted "high tech" theft like the 1M you mention, like kids with laptops are running around looking for specific BMW models to joyride in.

The situation you mention sounds pretty full of holes. Take off the tin foil hat, no one is going to hack your BMW.

My tin foil hat? The 3 series is the second most stolen luxury car http://www.thestreet.com/story/12720...xury-cars.html

There are no holes in this story. The car was parked a a train station during hurricane sandy, and was gone the following day.

It was recovered in Jamaica Queens (a beautiful and crime free part of NY where no one steals cars) a week later intact. No damage to the steering column or window.

For your argument sake, the door was wide open the whole time. They still got in the car and drove off with no keys (which was confirmed on the odometer since he reset it right after filling the tank - because you know, there was a giant hurricane coming and it's always good to have a full tank).

But realistically, the door was locked - most people are pretty good about locking their cars when you live in a bad area and are parking your car at a public train station.

And if you think that locks can't be broken, I have a tinfoil hat I will sell you.

Personally, I don't care. My car is a lease and if it gets stolen I get a new one. My sunglasses and radar detector are ultimately going to cost me more than the insurance deductible.

This is my pet peeve with BMW. I had a 335i before the MINI Cooper MCS I'm driving now and the 335i didn't have an alarm and therefore didn't have an audible sound when it locked. I made sure to order the alarm on the MINI. I just ordered a 228i and got the alarm again just to get the sound. The cheapest Japanese cars have figured out how to make the horn beep when you lock it, but you have to pay BMW $400 to get that sound. Annoying! But in any case the alarm will pay for itself in insurance savings.

Sounds like BMW's the one that has it figured out, eh?

lol I don't think any standard insurance would cover an aftermarket tune, intercooler, DP, CP, intake, etc.

Does your alarm beep when locking/unlocking? Mine doesn't (2018 model). Is it a setting or what?

I also don't have the "acoustic signal on locking/unlocking" in the doors menu.

I looked up the 2018 ordering guide and the alarm system came standard for the 2018 models. As Bud said, it’s an optional delete in iDrive, look under Doors/Keys and you can either select/deselect the flash and the acoustic signal.

Alarm was optional in my order (German model, last May).
I have the flash - signal option on the menu on iDrive, but not the acoustic one.

Anyways, I have ordered the Vgate adapter and going to try coding it soon.

I have never had an alarm on any of the BMW vehicles I have owned.
BTW, the rate of car theft has dropped precipitously over the years. I remember the old days when people had perimeter alarms that would yell at anyone who came close. My favorite was the one that screamed "protected by Viper" very loudly. No deterrent to the dedicated thief, I suspect. If you are really serious, put a tracker on your car.

UPDATE.
I coded today with Bimmercode. The acoustic signal is now function and I also restored the option on the iDrive menu.
It's strange it was delivered like that from the factory.
