iDrive stopped working/won't fully boot up

I turned the ignition on this morning and the iDrive unit froze at the "BMW" screen. Bluetooth still connected and started intermittently playing music, but I have no access to any settings at all. The screen goes blank like it's trying to reboot, but then keep getting the same screen afterwards.

Any ideas on what's going wrong or ways to fix it without having to take in to service?

try holding the radio on/off button for 30 seconds... it should reboot the system

Just tried that. No dice. Get same reboot/BMW screen.
