Current Golf R owner looking at M240ix and general questiond
I have super specific dimensions requirements because of my parking setup which requires ultimately pulling into a very narrow driveway driving 70ft and then parking into a very narrow garage spot. I then have to back out the whole way.
It is a pretty tedious process that often requires several adjustments of pulling forward and reshifting. I currently own a 2017 Golf R with an APR tune. I had been planning to upgrade the 22, but I can't justify paying 55k for the car due to the wild markups for that specific vehicle. When looking for narrow vehicles I stumbled upon the F22 M240ix, which actually is about half an inch narrower than my golf. I'm really intrigued by the driving assistant technology that BMW, but can't seem to really get a straight answer as to what tech is for which model. I'm currently looking at some out of state 2021 M240ix that all have the driver assistance package. Can anyone comment does that include the "backup assist" feature and if it does would that help out with backing out of a long stretch of narrow driveway? |

You can download the 2021 M240i xDrive manual and look for it there; e.g., via the PDF manual linked-to here: https://ownersmanuals2.com/bmw-auto/...-manual-78215/. FWIW, the 2023 M240i xDrive doesn't appear to offer the feature.

Without some kind of assist you are going to find a BMW has less of a view for this and the learning curve is going to be frustrating.
Try this, find an object directly across from the driveway, a part of a building, a tree, a cloud, wait that last one isn't going to work. Anyway, get your car lined up with the driveway. Sit in your car and look in the mirror. Have someone put a small piece of tape on the inside of the back window where you see the object. Try backing while keeping those two lined up. You will probably have to adjust the tape and the object till it works. Have a spotter help you. Or Put a camera somewhere to watch you back out and bluetooth it to your phone. |

The 2017 Golf is 70.8 not including mirrors whereas the 2021 m240 is 69.8, I'm gaining a inch. Long term plan is those walls have four 1/2 sheets on drywall on the interior side of the metal studs. I'm going to take it down to just one sheet so will gain 3inches of width overall, not so critical for me but more for resale of home.

Ooooh my favorite color R! I had a stage II MK7 R for 4+ years which I really enjoyed, but recently switched to a RWD M240i and absolutely love the driving dynamics of the BMW, as well as that sweet B58 exhaust note; I assume xDrive would give a great RWD bias unlike what the R could ever provide.
Are you good on length in your garage? Looks like the M240i is about 7.5" longer. The only thing that annoys me with the BMW is that blind spot monitors were never even an option, at least here in the US, and the convertible top has some bad blind spots when it is up.

I didn't realize about the blind spot monitoring... I've now has 5.5 yrs with blond spot monitoring. Hopefully losing it won't be too bad. I'm sensitive to length but ultimately more sensitive to width. I had really wanted to get the new 22 R, but I just can't justify paying 55k for a used R when I can get a 2021 M240ix with less than 6k miles for 48k.
Ultimately it's hard to drop down in performance and with the bar being going from the high torque 93 octane APR tuned R it's a bit tricky. Literally when I capped my search parameters to sub 6.0 0-60 w/awd and sub 71 wide my only options were the golf R, the 2023 John Cooper Mini Clubman at 70.9 wide and , the F22 M240ix so only up to 2021 and then the 2022+ m235i Gran coupe at 70.9 wide. I always thought the JCW line was a bit too flashy but for size it is definitely the most comparable to my current R. Between the M235 and M240 the 240 is 1 inch wider and 5 longer. I figure I might as well go with the M240 |

Regarding the ridiculous amount of garage drywall. Quite sure it is for fire rating, just to make sure you are aware.
Have you considered a facelifted Golf R (mk7.5) with better parking tech? The drivetrain is the same but has things like carplay and all the assists available. Is the S3 or RS3 not on your list due to size? What about the Veloster N? Just brainstorming some other cars.... |

I actually built 4 row houses and took one as an owners unit. I couldn't quite figure out the specs for that specific area being required by code, but it was what the architect put in
I would still have 1 sheet of 1/2 followed by metal stud with closed cell spray insulation then two sheets of 5/8 and then a sheet of Hardie panel. RS3 is off the list due to size, it 73 wide and on the longer side. The TTRS would be interesting given I would actually drop in length but it is 72.1 wide. I looked at the Veloster and BRZ, but neither are AWD. The Veloster is actually 71.3 so a full 1.5 wider than an M240. I feel the Veloster also feels too flashy/teenagerish I'm a dad who uses car as a daily driver. Already my wife is making fun of me for looking at a BMW. It feels strange that the BMW option is cheaper than the VW Golf R. Maybe if the TTRS was a little lower priced I would go on a diet to do the tighter squeeze, but at 70k for a 2021 it is just too much of a price jump vs BMW at 48k |

The width of the car is not the only issue. The length of the doors likely is as important to ease of use in a narrow garage. On that basis I suspect the 2 door 240 will be worse than your 4 door VW.

Two options for that garage,
Wait and get a self driving car (should be available any day now from Google) so you can just whistle and it will open the garage door and back out in the morning. Leave it in neutral and just push it in by hand. And that drywall is required by fire code. You must leave it there. |
