B58 Engine Intermittent Coolant Message......

I know this is nothing to worry about but it is getting colder here and the message popped out a few times. It stays for a few seconds and goes away.

Which tank do you check and which coolant do you add? The car is still under warranty but I am 100 miles away from the nearest dealership and I will go for service only next January.

The big tank is engine coolant, the little tank is for the intercooler in the intake manifold. They are not connected.

If it is just a little below to mark I would just add distilled water.

Probably good to keep to the coolant mix if you see freezing temps. I'm somewhat confident in saying it will be more than half a quart missing, so straight water may throw off the overall mix a bit.

Can't go wrong with OE https://www.bimmerworld.com/Fluids/B...ntifreeze.html

It's something to worry about alot...sorry.

It may be a little something, but that could turn into a big something. Meaning, find your leak and go from there.

It is normal for these cars to require a small amount of coolant top up now and then. I'm on my 4th BMW now and they all do it. With my last two N55 cars, over 10 years I went through about half a jug of the BMW blue coolant. I've so far added perhaps a cup of the BMW green coolant to my B58 in a year and a half.

Yeah, if you are going through a lot of coolant then you have a problem, but the idea it is a sealed system and you should never lose any at all is just not accurate.

You are completely right...... maybe a cup. The message didn't even reappear in a week. Last time was about in the same time frame you mentioned and the dealer said it was normal.

I just ordered a quart of BMW coolant.

I'm glad it was only a cup low...and sorry if I sounded too abrupt, but I guess I was worried because you said it wasn't a big deal...and it could've been.

You should still monitor levels anyway. The b58 had one hose that seemed to seep more than the 20 others you have! I forget which one, but I believe it's off of the expansion tank...the N55 has a similar hose seemingly famous for seeping.

Good luck!

Can anyone confirm which color coolant should be used in my 2019 M240i? This is my first BMW and the dealer didn't seem too confident when I asked them - blue or green? I spoke with two different employees and neither knew for sure.

I bought an OEM container (1L) when I first got the car earlier this year and it looks blue, haven't used it yet. When I open the main expansion tank, it is definitely below MIN, but hard to definitively tell which color, no warning light yet.

I found this article from BimmerWorld which seems to clear things up, but haven't found this confirmation anywhere else:
https://www.bimmerworld.com/Fluids/B...allon-Jug.html

It says any vehicles made after January 2018 should use green, and my car was made in October 2018....so green it is??

I wonder what changed in the cooling systems in 2018?

It sounds like an upgraded formula, maybe they wanted a cut off year for warranty reasons?

I finally received a quart of BMW coolant today. The warning has not reappear in more than a week. I topped to the mark with less than 2.5 cups of 50/50 mix.

The coolant I received is blue. I don't think it matters for a so small quantity and it is impossible to see in the tank which color is the original.

Update on this exciting topic - I ordered a jug of the OEM green coolant, mixed it 50/50 with distilled water, then compared it to what's in my system currently.

Looks like I have the blue, even though I have a 2019 vehicle built in October 2018. My maintenance history shows no work on the cooling system, though I know that does not guarantee anything.

Left is my car, right is the new mix. Now I need to get that jug of blue coolant back that I recently gave away.

I put in about 500mL of distilled water weeks ago, but the car seems to be a bit below MIN after sitting overnight, might have a leak on my hands.

I believe they are equivalent chemical make up except for color. I was nearing 14 K on mine and when I checked the expansion tank it was a hair below min and I have the green in the car and some blue mix left over from a bike flush so I just poured it in as a preemptive measure.

Now the Orange, Euro organic coolant used in Audi and my Pacifica is a different chemical mix altogether. I would not mix those.

Coolant line leaking is a common issue. Look closely at the ends of the line. Easy and inexpensive fix.

B48 has a problem with coolant, soon or later, a little tube / sleeve broke.

I have a 230i from 2018, and just has this problem 3 months ago.

The mechanich of BMW told me, itīs a common fault from B48

By the way, my liquid is blue colour.
