If the chip/crack isn't too large, the Safelite fix is really pretty good and the spot will almost disappear. Much cheaper and less hassle than a full on replacement.
The last time I had it done on the wife's car, I think repair shop said they got the best results as long as the impact point and the "spider" cracks weren't any larger than a quarter.

If the chip/impact spot is smaller than a quarter & crack smaller than a dollar bill they'll usually try to repair it.
