Time From Customs/VPC to Delivery
Hello all!
I just got an email from BMW NA saying that my car is approaching the New York Port. While this is very exciting, I was caught off guard by the language in their email stating that it can take between 3-4 weeks to get from the port to my place of delivery (which is Voss BMW, Dayton Ohio). I find this hard to believe. Does it really take that long? Interested in hearing other people's experience. FWIW I ordered through the BMW Military Sales Program.

I was at a different port (Baltimore) but after it reached the port (Saturday) it made it through everything and was at the dealer, located near Pittsburgh the following Friday...so not even a week for me. You are pretty close to the port so I wouldn't think it would be 3-4 weeks, but they are probably covering themselves just in case. More than likely I would think you would have it in 1-2 weeks.

Ah.. I remember this phase. This is probably the most painful part. If you're lucky, your car would not get picked up for customs inspection and in such a scenario, it would be released from the port/vpc in maybe 2 or 3 days of arrival and gets onto the truck to your dealership.
If it is however selected for customs inspection, it can take up to 4 weeks. My car was stuck at the port for over 2 weeks. There is really nothing that you can do during this phase. If your car is in the front of the line for customs inspection, it would get inspected soon and released soon as well. If it's in the back, you've got to be prepared for a really long wait. After that, you can even track your car through trucking. Once it reaches your dealer, it should be about 2 days tops before you have your car. |

Thanks all! Looks like the lead time is luck of the draw. Thankfully I'm not in any huge rush, was just curious what everyone's experience was.

Yep! Not-so-proud TDI owner here. We got the good faith reward from VW back in October or November but we haven't heard what the next step will be, beyond what's in the news. I anticipate some kind of cash reward, a free tune of some sort to bring the car into compliance and an maybe an extended warranty. We love the car so we have no intention of giving it up. Just sucks that this all happened right after we got it!

My first Euro Delivery, the car arrived in NJ on Friday and was at my dealer in Maine on Monday. I was shocked.
Second time around, took three weeks. But the second time, it had to go through the body shop to repair a couple door dings and the front spoiler I dinged on a curb. Was delivered PERFECT, so while the wait was annoying, it was worth it. What is kind of annoying is that you can track the car all the way across the ocean in great detail, but once it hits port it is in a black hole with no updates. Would be nice if they could just keep you posted.

Mine was at the New Jersey port for just under three weeks. Maybe they heard I was in Amsterdam and held it for a closer look, or they were just waiting for the carrier to fill up. The dealer did say my car was the last to unload. Hard to tell without tracking at the port.

I just got my car...Arrived in NJ last Saturday, and it got to the dealer midday on Tuesday. Not a long wait, but my dealer is only about 100 miles from the port.

That's pretty darn quick! My car got to port a week before yours and it still isn't at my dealer.

Yeah, I was surprised as well...Probably due to how close I am to the port itself, and my area is quite high volume so they probably have a lot of trucks going back and forth.

My car hit Baltimore late Wednesday night and is currently [considering that updates are slow to, uhhhh, update] in the "Finishing Touches" process. BMW Genuis folks say it will get loaded on a train to Galveston then trucked to my dealer in Wichita. So, I'm thinking another 10-12 days but we'll see.

All depends on how long it needs to wait for transport. In certain cases for certain clients BMW can step in and make sure the car gets the next available ride out of port, but otherwise there's not much you can do.
