17" wheel and tire setup built for comfort

Just picked up a 2020 M240i convertible in Mineral Grey Metallic, it came with the staggered wheel setup with the 18” 791M wheels and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

I am interested in setting up a more comfortable touring type ride. I definitely want to go with a 17” setup. I found one that I like at tirerack.
MSW Type 73 in Gloss Dark Grey, 17x7.5 ET43 and Vredestein Quatrac Pro 225/45R17.

Anyone have experience with purchasing a complete package from tirerack, including the TPMS sensor and mounting and balancing? I am assuming the TPMS sensor will work with my car.

Also, if anyone has already gone this route of a 17” setup designed for comfort, I would love to hear about it. I saw plenty of 17” snow tire setups but not much on what I am searching for.

Thanks,
Steve

I was planning on the same configuration using the Quatrac Pro, except using BBS SR 17X7½ ET35 wheels that I already own. That looked to me like a perfect three-season touring combination. I won't be touring again anytime soon, though, so that plan is on hold.

I've bought a large number of tires from Tire Rack over the years, but only a few wheels and no TPMS sensors. I wouldn't hesitate to use them for the whole package. Their service has always been excellent for me.

Thank you both for the info. Do BMW center caps fit the BBS wheels?

Gee, I'm not sure...let me go look.

Well, it turns out I've got BBS center caps, so I'm not sure. However, there's a good chance that the Rack can answer that question. They're always happy to take questions, whether or not you buy anything from them at the moment.

Be sure to post some photos once you've got your new set installed!

I've ordered multiple wheel/tire/tpms sets from TireRack, and always happy with it; two different sets specifically for my 228, and several for other cars. The TPMS have been indistinguishable from factory, work fine and no problems swapping wheels and resetting to the new sensors. If there is a down side to using TR, it is that it can be tougher to use their road hazard plan (vs. a local shop), but luckily I haven't needed to. Shipping may be a little weird these days - sometimes they travel separately and don't all arrive the same day, even before the covidpocalypse. And they can probably tell you if the stock center caps will work w/ various wheels.

I'm in the 17" for comfort category. The chassis and suspension of the 2 is inherently sporty and tight so you can go comfort on tires and really not give up any capabilities at the daily/street level. The largest difference you will feel is from the steering and responsiveness which are all subjective, not to mention NVH which will be worlds different which is objective.

My first set was the OEM conti's which I replaced with General RS which was a massive difference, especially in the wet. But my next tire will be a straight comfort tire, something with less growl ideally as silent as possible. Because of the sizes in the 17" I'm limited to sporty tires anyway so it's no loss. The rack recommended Avid Ascend GT for their wet traction and smoothness since Florida.

Finally decided on my wheels, went with BMW style 379. I believe these are stock on 228 or 230's. They look very similar to the stock 18's that are already on the car.

Wheel Size: 17x7.5

Bolt Pattern: 5-120

Wheel Finish: Machined with Gray Pockets

Off Set: 43mm

Factory Part Number: 36116850151

Now that I have the rims, I'm back to deciding on tires.

225/45R17 would be the correct size to keep the overall diameter at 25". I still want the best touring ride I can get, so I am thinking about going with a larger overall diameter.

A 225/50R17 is about 25.9" total diameter and is right on the cusp of being within the 3% max recommended diameter change. I think there is plenty of room in the wheel well for a larger diameter tire, with the stock suspension.

Another option is a 235/45R17, the overall diameter goes up to 25.3" which is very reasonable. The problem with this option is my rim is 7.5" wide and I am not sure if I can put a 235 on it.

I really suggest you call Tire Rack and speak to an expert. From the Rack's site, you are good to go with a 235/45-17 tire:

Whatcha gonna do with the setup you are removing?

I might be interested in the wheels and tires you are taking off of your BMW if they are the 436 wheels. Please let me know if you interested in selling the setup. Thanks.

Finally got some tires.

Finally got some tires. I went with the Vredestein Quatrac Pro in 225/50R17. These are 26" diameter instead of the stock 25" diameter. I didn't have any issues fitting them to the car and did several full lock turns with no rubbing. I only have about 25 miles on the tires, so no firm opinions yet. The ride does seem more comfortable and the steering is not nearly as sharp, which I expected. Going to give these 1000 miles and see what happens. I do like the tire size and even if I do go back to performance tires, I will probably stick with the 17" wheels and 225/50 tire size. I'm keeping the original staggered setup, may put them back on occasionally. I also checked the speedometer with two different GPS apps and the speedometer was dead on with the GPS.
