Do you have wheel locks on your BMW?
I know this is a totally personal question that is based on preference, where you live, where you work, etc. But frankly, after having wheel locks come standard on my '02 Miata SE, I was kind of surprised that my M240i didn't come with them. I'm waffling as to whether to bother getting a set or not. Just curious what your thoughts are.

Yeah, I gave up on them after a wheel lock bolt quit on me while torquing it on another manufacturer's car. It cost me many hundreds of dollars to get that issue squared-away.
The underlying issue in that situation was that I didn't live anywhere near where wheel thefts were an issue. Had I been living in such an environment, I'm not sure what I would have chosen to do.

Wheel locks are little more than a minor nuisance to professional thieves. Bottom line if they want your wheels, they are going to get them. Used to live in an area that had a lot of issues with this and wheel locks did not help the poor folks who had to deal with this. No one wanted to steal the steelies from my old POS cars I had back then so I was spared!

I put mine on when I installed vmr 19". The gap between the lock lug and the lug hole on the rim is very tight. Thieves are going to use reverse cutter sockets to take locking lugs off the quick way so there's no way one of those sockets is going to fit in between the wall of the rim and the larger round lock lug. The car has tilt sensor built into the security system too so overall, living in a city and not the best neighborhood, I'm not worried at all

You mean the locking nuts? These come as standard on UK models. Why wouldn't they do the same for the US?

Ive considered actually removing mine.
have owned multiple german cars and wheels were never stolen. What I dont want is the potential of one breaking and the repair it will create after. Replacing a regular lug stud is easy. German cars...not the same. |
