Hey all, so as the title says I'm trying to make a decision to keep a 2013 328i or go with a 2017 M240i.

Backstory, I bought a 328i for $18k with 68k miles. 7 days later the oil pressure light came on, dealer says it's a sensor, I'm worried it's the timing chain issue. It also needs tires, shocks and I bought the bimmertech Apple CarPlay/backup camera kit. So that brings the worst-case total to around $25k.

I found a 2017 M240i with comparable miles for $32k….is it just buyers remorse that I feel like I might be better off long term with this car?

It looks like I can back out of the 328i sale
IF it is the timing chain. If not, then I can't, and I'm stuck with what feels like a ticking time bomb of an engine.

By your math, worst case is the 328 costs you $25k. To that end, the M240 costs $32k in the best case scenario (and more if you have to fix things on that which, at 60k, is a possibility). The M240 will definitely cost more to run in just about every sense beyond the dice roll of stuff breaking. How much are you actually willing to spend?

I was lucky enough to get my 228s timing chain/tensioner/oil pump stuff replaced under warranty. Pretty stout engines otherwise. While it's expensive to do once it's done you don't have to think about it again. I'd recommend doing oil pan/gasket while in there.

That all said, the M240 is a far better car, so if the 4 doors and money don't really matter that much to you, I'd lean that direction anyway.

Wow, still amazed at how crazy the prices seems to be every time I look at one of these posts. I think the answer truly depends on how you view car and how much you love it. I bought a lexus is250 as my first car for around $23k. The first time I floor it on the freeway trying to pass a container, I realized I just made a very expensive mistake. I went on to enjoy the car for three years while considering trading in the car but the cost doesnt make sense to me.

Fast forward to about half a year ago, after about 2 years of researching and looking and watching the used car market. I ended up trading the lexus in for a 2018 m240i vert that has 22k miles at cost of around $32k. Now sure granted this car cost 50% more than my lexus. But I will be lying to you if I said its not money well spent.

Another scenario, a buddy of mine bought a used 328i (Lower mileage than yours). He ended up having to fix water pump and couple other stuff. Sold the car in 3 years. Adding the depreciation and all the cost to fix the car. He ended up down close to 6-700 a month, which means he could have leash a new 5 series and still ended up on top.

If you are buying a 2013 328i with 60k miles and with all the add on ended up costing $25k, to me it doesnt make sense. The fact that you think you are going to be stuck with a ticking time bomb of an engine tells me that if you are in your right mind you should be backing out of this sale if you can.

The 2013 328i is also a first-year model, if I recall correctly. Never a great bet with BMW. I'd definitely cut my losses if I were you and upgrade to the 6 cylinder M240. It is a far better car in every way.

As a point of reference, my 2017 240 convertible has been incredibly reliable (knock wood). But admittedly, I'm only at about 17k miles. All BMWs tend to require some major investment when you approach 70k.

I have a 2016 235i with 50k miles, not a single issue. I have a buddy with a 2015 with 90k miles and no issues. They are great vehicles if you take care of them. I do all my own maintenance so the cost is comparable to a Honda Civic lol. Also have a 2018 X3 M40i with the B58 motor, great motor.

In my opinion, the 240i you will have much more fun with and I feel that they are reliable. Just my 2 cents!

Yeah the car market is kinda bonkers right now. I walked into the dealership expecting to pay about 2x as much as I did for a lot newer and lot fewer miles but…they had this Estoril Blue M-Sport and I was like oh she's pretty and I'll have money to spare.

The more I think about it, it's kind of nuts to spend +30k on a car with close to 70k miles.

I should just lease a Kia Stinger and be a wannabe lol

I got my m235 that has 38k miles and is very clean and stock for 28k$, think you can find a much better deal than that 328i, that high of mileage concerns me for a car that you paid nearly 20k for and has a possible engine issue imo, I think you'd enjoy the m240i much more as well.

The only maintenance i've done so far was oil changes. I'm too lazy to do it myself and don't want to buy the tools. Costs me about $120 a year for a oil change. My next big maintenance is the brakes. That will cost about $1500.
