idrive occasionally reboots itself. Problem?

Hi all. This has occurred about 5 times since July last year. I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing, what causes it, and is there any solutions. For your info, I upgraded to the Harman/Kardon hi-fi system.

So this is what happens:
I listen to music on iphone 6 via bluetooth. Suddenly there's no sound at all. After 1-2 mins, the idrive screen displays the BMW logo (I guess it's rebooting/resetting itself). And after a few minutes, the screen and sound becomes back to normal again.
On one occasion, the bass disappeared and I turned off/on the car and it became normal.

A friend of mine also experienced the same thing. She took it to the dealer and of course the dealer found nothing. I did a quick search on google and found other BMW models have similar problems as well. Some had to change the ccc (Car Communication Computer).

I hope it's nothing too serious. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Is this the "secret menu" in the Check Control display between the speedo/tach gauges? The one that's triggered by the last 5 digits in the VIN? I haven't played with that yet ...

I've got a p3 gauge installed, so oil temp is taken care of ... but I had no idea about the iDrive screen temp. That's very cool, and worth paying attention to. Thanks!

Come to think of it, it hasn't happened during winter...maybe it is overheating. But what exactly is overheating? the idrive screen? the amp? the computer? Yes, I live in Hong Kong, so summer temperature is brutal.

I haven't played around with the secret menu yet. I'll have a look in the next few days.

Most likely the computer. If it was the screen, it would just shut off but when it goes back up should be right where it left.

If it's rebooting then it's the computer that gets hot and as fail safe reboots

Specially if you leave car parked under the sun for extended periods of time

Hi pikachu. I was wondering why the over-heating only happen to a few people and not alot of people living in hot places. So I guess I shouldn't be concerned unless it happens more often?
By the way, how come ur so knowledgeable about this sort of stuff? impressive!

Mine has rebooted on a couple occassions and I live in Chicago where up until yesterday hasn't been warm at all. So, for me anyway, it's not an overheating issue. Sounds like software glitch, I do have my phone plugged into USB and run Rhapsody radio app, so that connnection could play a role?

If it keeps happening I'll take it to dealer to examine. Car is a month old

could be the rhapsody app having some bug and making idrive run out of memory or run the cpu high % and thus overheating too....

try to drive with the phone plugged in but listen to the regular radio for a while :-D

I listen to music on my iPhone playlist via bluetooth, so I'm not sure if it's due to the app. Your car is a month old and has rebooted a couple of times? That totally sucks. Probably should check it out.

I did notice, however, on 2 occasions, the idrive rebooted itself after listening to music at a higher volume. Maybe it's the amp overheating? I'll try to replicate it next week to see if this is the cause.

Lol. Maybe.

So it seems this problem doesn't happen to too many people. Guess I'm unlucky then.
Will continue to observe and let u all know if it gets worse.

I have seen this reboot with changes after the cars negative terminal has been disconnected and reconnected. Usually it happens once on initial startup and after it reboots. Just a thought.

mine does it at random, usually 2 or 3 minutes after I start a drive. Also, sometimes my rearview camera doesn't work, or the brightness on it is set to 0

Hi mike. How many times did this happen to you?
My rear view camera had the same problem once a couple of months ago too, but after I restarted the car it went back to normal and it never happened again. :

Care to link out to how I get to said menu?

Just chiming in, I just took delivery of a '15 M235, and I had about four reboots in about 2 days... two of them driving home w/ the car...

I have the car in for a few cosmetic things and I told them about the reboots, they'll do the usual (+ I'd like them to flash update everything, I did the bluetooth update but it rebooted anyways since then).

I suppose if I still have occasional reboots after the latest update... it's just life?

I've had the same issue 2 or 3 times. It's been a 3 or 4 months since it has occurred again, but same symptoms as everyone else is describing.

I've had mine reboot a couple times. It wasnt hot out when it happened, but here in CO the UV can heat up surfaces in the car pretty fast even if its cool out, so I dont know if heat was the issue or not.
