Carplay options for 2016

Hey guys, was just wondering what the options are to get carplay on 2016 and prior cars, other than the bimmer-tech carplay MMI or a NBT unit retrofit?

What idrive version do you currently have?

Those are the only options, unless you have an ID4 NBT EVO headunit you can reflash the software to Id6 to get the new interface and CarPlay. I did this in my 2016 with no issues

How so? Via usb? I've heard it crashes alot since the hardware requirements are different on id5 and id6.

So you need to flash with ESYS via enet cable with full psdzdata set. Supposedly it only crashed when using route guidance on BMW navigation system - which is fine I never use it and I’ve got CarPlay now so don’t need it then you just full a full FSC set to To activate CarPlay, navigation etc and your set.

It will only work with an NBT EVO ID4, not the regular ID4.

Is there a guide anywhere on this?

Yeah heaps of info have a look at the coding section on the F30 forum but beware everyone advises against it. I thought it was worth the risk and so far haven't had any issues.

The basic process is an ECU software update and editing your FA string to trick ESYS into thinking you have an ID6 from factory. When that's done you need to buy FSC codes through a vendor. Just a reminder you need to have an NBT EVO with an ATM module, im not sure of the exact production dates for these conditions but from my research it has been at least 12/2015+

I have an 2017 M240 with build date of 10/16 but apparently I have ID4 nbt evo and no nav. Can I just have mine coded to update to ID5 or ID6 lite with CarPlay?

I mainly just want the newer UI on ID5 or ID6 but I don't want to swap hardware.

Thanks

You can buy this.

Just made a video about it. It's a hacky way to get what you want but it works well and is cheap enough.

Thanks but mainly just want the newer iDrive UI. Not so worried about the CarPlay.

Can id5 or 6 be coded with stock hardware I have?

You probably can. i don't expect it'll be as easy as coding however.

What about the new idrive is so good that you want it? Just curious.

Hey can you go into more detail on some of these things? I am not familiar with ESYS or psdzdata set.

I also could car less if my BMW route guidance works if I could just get CarPlay to run on this hardware! I know as a computer person that it must be possible, the hardware cannot be that outdated that it can't handle to code. As far as I understand the computation is on the iPhone and the iDrive just handles display and interactivity?

I paid (to me) a lot of money for this car and it really should have CarPlay.
Thanks for any info you can provide!

Don't you need to add a Wi-Fi antenna to utilize CarPlay?

The ID4 NBT EVO doesn't have one, how did work around that?

Where did you find out how to do this? I’ve been looking for solutions to put CarPlay in my car with the same iDrive system you have.

Yep. I reflashed to get CarPlay. It works, but it's clunky without the antenna. I've got it and will be putting it in this weekend.

It was pretty easy to install the antenna. Took about 10-15 minutes. You don’t really even need to detach the vent and radio trim entirely. I left the wiring attached and was still able to get the head unit out and attach the antenna. Be careful that you clearly hear the click when you install, as I had to reattach it after my first attempt.

Tools needed:
Trim removal pry tool
10mm socket to take off the black terminal on your battery
T20 torx screwdriver

Hey,

Just wondered if you ever found any instructions or is it just the standard process for flashing? I've done an NBT Evo flash before but not from iDrive 4. Apparently when you do SVT calculations in E-Sys it doesn't do it properly :/

Thanks in advance,
Artur
