1st gear feels anemic

I have to shift to second, ideally 3rd to pick up speed quick in case I'm taking a left with oncoming traffic coming quick. This is my first manual so lately I've been accelerating to 4k rpm in 1st, then shift to third, but that doesn't feel as fast as going from 1st to 2nd to 3rd.

I'm wondering if I should modify the shifter to be a short shifter, and if tuning the car will help with 1st and 2nd gear acceleration.

1st to 2nd usually is done in rapid succession- though taking off on hills or meandering in traffic back-ups the gearing is good. 2nd gear acceleration is plenty for my traffic conditions - and yes like you I sometimes do need the 4K rpm in 1st or even 2nd - but I like it.
If your new to manuals. I think as you add more miles you'll get over your concerns.

not try to call you out, but are you giving enough gas? I've got a lowly 228 and if I go 50% throttle I'm having plenty of fun in first.

also, why are you shifting so low in the Tom range? get it up there! 1st starts to pull less around 6k. Imo you've still got room to push it.

I do agree that 3rd gear pulls very nicely. it's a blast, though once I scream past 80 I get nervous about cops...haha

It's a turbo car and you'll need to drive it as such. Turbos require load to generate boost. In 1st and 2nd gears, the torque multiplication of the drivetrain is such that full boost cannot be realized in those gears. If you're not using a 50%+ throttle going up to 4,000rpms, the car may not feel overly quick. I suggest always running the car in the Sport throttle settings. The throttle will be quick and wastegate settings a bit more aggressive, thus the turbo and acceleration will be more responsive.

Lastly, your car has a 2.0 liter motor. If you want the best acceleration, you need to use 1st, then 2nd, and so on. Don't be afraid to rev the motor out either. It's made for it. Contrary to popular belief, short shifting and laboring along to get up to speed, skip shifting at low rpms, etc. uses more fuel than bursting up to speed quickly with moderate throttle.

Thanks for the replies. I'm breaking in the car so I am avoiding revving as much as I can. At 600 miles currently, i drive just a few miles a day.

Sport mode 1st gear has nice throttle response.

I've been shifting to 2nd sooner (eco pro, comfort) instead of revving 1st to 4000 and shifting to 3rd, i like the acceleration from that.

I admit I barely push the accelerator because of how fast the car is for me right now

oh yeah If you're still breaking it in I can see how it might seem how you describe. the throttle is stiff past about the 25% range, so you'll need to commit for acceleration.

hammer down!
