I can confirm that 8.5 works.

Depends on many factors.

Stock Suspension

Rim Width: Ideal rim width is 8 front and 8.5 rear. It's possible to fit 8.5-9 upfront but I would not recommend.

Rim Diameter: Rim Diameter is irrelevant but profile does make a difference. 40 profile for 18 inch and 35 profile for 19 inch is recommended the maximum possible profile.

Rim Offset: The more aggressive the better. 37 is the sweet spot.

Tires: Nothing more than 225 front. 235 is possible depending on the tire but I would not recommend. 225 on 8 width rim is stock setup and not only ideal, but highly recommended because the 2 series is very tight upfront. Rear is more flexible with upwards to 255 possible.

Lowered

Rims: More rim width is possible. I wouldn't exceed 8.5 upfront. I wouldn't exceed 9 for the rear.
Tires: Same as above.

Lowered and Cambered Front

Rims: Same as lowered

Tires: 245 is now possible upfront if camber is maxed out.

Hope this helps. Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of my numbers. Word of advice: stick to the stock setup whether you wanna go square or staggered. It will save you a lot of headache and looks better than any other setup IMO.
