Shuddering/Vibration after tire replacement
Hi everybody, I own a BMW F22 M235i xDrive that has been showing shuddering/hiccups when accelerating especially in low gears or with full throttle in higher ones after a tire replacement. The wheels are OEM 225/35/19 and 245/30/19 and torqued to spec.
In November the car had a flat front tire and I replaced only the front tires (only later I realised I should’ve replaced all four) for Michelin PS4S ZP (runflats) and the car did not show any issues. One month later (about 5k kilometres) I had the rear tires also replaced for Pirelli’s Runflats and upon accelerating the car had very pronounced hiccups/shuddering. So, I had all 4 tires then replaced for regular (non runflat) Michelin PS4S and the issue got better but it was still there. I went to the dealership because of this and they diagnosed it as being a transfer case issue. They assured me that even though the 4S are not technically runflat, it shouldnt cause this issue. Acting on their recommendations I had the transfer case oil replaced and adaptations reset and it got a bit better but it the issue was still there. Frustrated, I replaced the previous wheels with OEM winter wheels that I had that have Pirelli’s Sottozero runflats 225/40R18 (all of them) and the issue seems to be gone. Even in incline the car seems to not shudder at all. Can anybody shed some light on why this is the case? Could this be a tire or rim issue or is it something else? Do you have any recommendations on how to go about this? Much appreciated. |

You could have a mis match in tire diameters unless you run the same on all four with an X drive car and that can cause all sorts of issues. Not a big fan of run flats and I would never run them mixed with non run flats.

Probably poor balancing of your tires. Was it the same shop that mounted both sets? Get them road force balanced and see if that helps. Also, have them check for a bent wheel. That seems to be a pretty common thing.
