What are you guys using to register a battery?

I bought a new battery (AGM 90ah) but my damn Foxwell scanner won't register the thing. After a bunch of research, it turns out the Foxwell can't register batteries in newer 2009+ BMWs. I'm not looking for something computer based but rather something phone/dongle based. I don't need to code anything. Thanks.

Which Foxwell unit do you have that won't register the battery?

That would be useful to know since I purchased an NT530 unit for just that purpose.

Foxwell NT301.

This guy tried the NT520 and it didn't work on his 2010 328 and he got the same registration errors as myself. The NT530 is a minor update to the NT520 so I have little faith in the NT530 unless someone in here says otherwise.

Thanks for the reminder... mine was showing some weakness last winter. Would it be better just keep an eye on the voltage or just forget about monitoring health and replace it regardless? Mine's a 17'

I use the Bimmergeeks Pro Tool app, it's a bit more powerful than I needed but works great. Even has some German translation for line items.

Thank you all. I downloaded Bimmerlink, spent the $40 to get the full app, and registered the battery in 15 seconds.

I had a Foxwell 510 for my 2010 328xi. It won't work on my 16 M235i or 17 Mini.

I bought an OEM 92ah battery yesterday and used Bimmerlink to flawlessly register. Bimmerlink is a onetime fee and you need an OBD plug (from Amazon) I would recommend both Bimmerlink as well as Bimmercode.

Perhaps this is unhelpful, but I didn't need to code or register my battery.

I recently picked up a new battery from Autozone, and it was plug & go.

Should I have coded it? Everything seems to work.

Absolutely yes, it must be registered. The car will run fine after a battery swap, but the DME engine computer) needs to be told that a new battery has been added or else it will overcharge the battery and kill the battery within a year or two. The DME monitors the battery and ups the charging as the battery degrades over time.

Thank you. I will do this tomorrow. Probably just saved my battery.

I used iCarly on my 2017 M240 last fall. Sad that we now need a subscription to change batteries. I'd love to see a class action against car companies that don't have such required things available through the UI.

FYI I use Foxwell on other cars and believe it or not they're amazing about upgrading software. I've pointed out two issues in the past and they're eager to get their software updated. One was for a rare Pontiac G8 (made in Australia) doing a rare ABS bleed and they went back and forth with test files and logs with me for a few days before they got it. And they knew it would only effect two cars G8s and GTOs. I was impressed.

So you want want to contact Foxwell tech support, they get back quick except for the timezone difference.

I have the Schwaben version of the Foxwell NT510. I think I got it from ECS.

If you have a generic Foxwell, you may need to get the specific make support module software for it. The Schwaben is basically a grey NT510 pre-loaded with the BMW/Mini module.

I haven't actually registered the battery in my M235. But I have used it on two other F series BMW's to register the battery. Tricky to find the right menu, but worked perfectly once I found it.

TrboMike is right about Foxwell's tech support. I didn't think the brake bleed procedure was working correctly and contacted them several times and they were helpful. In hindsight. I didn't believe them until I had gone through the effort of downloading/installing eSys and realized that Foxwell had the exact same procedure, and responses, and even the same plagiarized text as Esys uses.

This is good to hear as I was planning on using my Foxwell to reg my now aged battery. I guess I should check to find the menu item before the battery actually dies.

That's the Schwaben branded Foxwell unit I used. It used to be mine but sold it to my neighbor with a 2002 530i because the unit didn't do jack crap on my M235. I borrowed it to register my battery and it threw all sorts of errors and after a bunch of research, it turns out the NT510 with the BMW software won't register batteries on the 2009+ BMWs. The fancier Foxwell units do seem to work, but paying $50 for the Bimmerlink app was worth it and has a TON more capability than what the Foxwell can do. I registered the battery in my M235 in about a 1 minute.

XutvJet I'm not doubting your experience. My experience was different. Maybe different software versions?

I won't say this unit is fantastic. I used it to monitor transmission temps when I did a fluid change, and it kept flaking while doing that. Darn annoying when you are trying to monitor a trend. And navigating the menus is a bit obtuse and slow.

Not sure I'd buy it again. The newer phone based apps are generally nicer and potentially cheaper. But it has generally worked well enough and was a reasonable value when I bought it.
