PSA: You should probably consider changing out your O2 Senor
While I was chasing down an issue that eventually presented itself to be a boost leak, I changed my Pre Cat O2 sensor off the advice of a throwaway thread from an poster who with a similar problem.
A comment was made that the O2 slowly decays over time, and won't immediately trip the CEL. One reason for the O2 wearing down quicker was using burble tunes, which send a bunch of unburnt fuel through the exhaust. I can say the car does actually run a bit better since the O2 change (again, no codes prior to this) and even with my "tune" which has always caused lower fuel economy over the stock tune (regardless of driving habits) I'm getting the best fuel economy I've ever gotten. Per the readout, I'm now around 340ish miles on a tank (I verified at least 325mi with a range of 15mi to go this morning, just to say I could) Manual Calculations show my consumption was 26.8mpg - (325/12.1 Gallons) And this is of course with winter formulation gas, it's possible it could get better in the summer. Previous averages were around 23/maybe 24mpg with typically less than or up to 300mi - I think maybe 310 once or so. Beyond MPG, smiles per gallon are up too. The car still has a boost leak (Oring wasn't set properly, but I ordered a completely new chargepipe. Old one is for sale for cheap!) but the throttle response and the power increase are not only felt from the seat of the pants (less clutch needed for moving from light to light) Virtual Dyno also noted a bit of an increase in power as well. If you're getting up there in mileage, I'd suggest you change the sensor (about $100) and remove the dumb burble tunes. |
