BMWUSA Very Poor Customer Experience

Some of you may be affected by the Water Pump Electrical Connector recall #24V-608. I first learned of it and the potential for fire (low risk, they say, but possible, and my car configuration is irreplaceble) in August. My car hasn't moved since. No remedy since August. They have no idea when it will be available. I asked the dealer and BMWUSA if they could just inspect it to determine if it actually has a corroded connector to perhaps be able to drive it meanwhile, understanding it would go back once the recall remedy parts are available. The dealer said they cannot under the recall and when I asked BMWUSA to authorize an inspection, they said, "we don't provide inspections - we just do recalls". Very poor customer satisfaction support. Call them and make your voice heard if you are in this situation. 800-525-7417

I agree with you though, shouldn't have to DIY with an active recall.

I'm just driving mine like normal. I'm not even worried about it.

The recall mentions "fluid" leaking on the connector as the root cause of the fire risk potential. So, a quick finger swipe on the top of the pump is a pretty easy and straight forward check. I know some owners prefer not to open their hoods, and I understand that there is principal afoot, but if the dealer is giving you the run around, grab a flashlight and check your car.

Well, you're gonna have to check it yourself or have someone do it for you if you want comfort in knowing you can drive the car. Seems very easy to inspect yourself.

I wouldn't worry about driving it. A fire risk seems like an extremely low probability and really doesn't make much sense either. There's probably more risk in letting it sit than not driving it. Animals seem to like to get into engine compartments that sit cold for long periods of time.

The inspection is part of the recall - why would they inspect it they don't have the ability to fix it if it fails the inspection? That could double the work.

If you have a good relationship with your dealership they might comp a check for you on a personal basis. I can totally see why BMWNA would not though, it would be a bad precedent. Personally I think not driving it is kind of extreme. I suspect they do too.

I expect everything would be quite dry by now, sitting since August. I am only able to look from the top down and cannot visualize what needs to be seen. I cannot look from underneath as has been suggested, so I don't think I would be able to take advantage of this.

The car has its space inside our very pristine garage. We have routine extermination service for the garage, along with the house, and we don't even have any notable presence of bugs in the garage, no less an animal that would penetrate the engine compartment. I am not interested in any incremental risk of fire for reasons noted below. Once damaged, I cannot replace it and it would no longer be all original if repaired from fire.

Yes, it is more work for them and perhaps not a part of the standard recall process. But, if a customer actually requests an inspection, I know that OEMs spend much more on goodwill than what it would cost BMWUSA to reimburse a dealer via the warranty system. Even if they do not offer it, for a luxury brand, I find it unreasonable to reject a request. Both BMWUSA and the dealer declined my request just to take a quick look.

The car is 10 years old with 21,000 miles. There is not a chip, nor scratch and the interior looks like new. The body is all original. No one has ever sat in the rear. It's a "keeper" as the last of a formula that is irreplaceable....RWD, 6MT, 4cyl, just like my original 320i. They don't make anything like this any longer and I want to preserve it and hand it down to my son one day as a classic, just as the prior generation did with some 2002 models. It's not at all a daily driver...I use my X3 meanwhile.

Between 4+ months to produce a remedy for the recall issue that still is not ready and refusing a simple inspection that would take, perhaps, 5-10 minutes, I am very disappointed in BMW. When the time comes for my next daily driver to replace the X3, I won't automatically consider them first based on customer support.

What is the purpose of the connector? Is it a signal path or an electrical power path?

They've been dealing with Takata airbag recalls for nearly 10 years and still aren't done!

I got tired of not driving my car (I have another daily driver X3), so I was able to get the dealer to do a courtesy inspection of the water pump connector to see if my car was at risk. They gave it a clean bill of health with no evidence of corrosion or any water drops/leaks onto the connector. Apparently, this doesn't affect all involved cars similarly. If you have an affected vehicle and a concern, as well as a good relationship with your dealer, they may be willing to just do a courtesy look-see so you can decide what you want to do while waiting for the actual recall parts to arrive (plastic shield for all and new pump with connector, if you have the problem happening). It's been about 5 months since BMWNA issued the recall, but still no parts are available. BMW refused to authorize the inspection (to compensate the dealer), but my great dealer service department stepped up to do this for me.

Although true, that was the recall of all recalls. This is much more narrow scoped.

Me too, just driving it, haven’t given it too much thought. Would be nice to get it looked at and fixed when that’s available.
