That issue is not exclusive to Mercedes. I try to remember to run the A/C at least 10-15 minutes weekly, even off season, in all my vehicles for that reason, and also to circulate the refrigerant through the system as it lubricates components such as seals and gaskets, and keeps them from becoming brittle and leaking.

Common in BMWs as well. I turn my A/C on at least once a month during the winter to keep the ductwork dryed out.
