Diff leak repair

I got a bit of a sting after taking my F22 2015 into BMW for a recall software update as they told me I had a weeping/leaking diff NSR, and a rattling flexi exhaust and a leaking shock.

There is a local independent garage that does BMW work but they're saying they don't work on transmissions or exhausts and have advised a transmission shop 40 miles away and a separate exhaust place.

My question is would people recommend taking it to 2 specialist garages for this kind of thing or would you trust a normal (non dealership) garage to make these repairs? It's a real faff as of course they're both only open while I work.

Cheers.

Double chk,

As far as I know a slight weeping diff is not unusual nor dangerous.

Can you hear the exhaust rattle or are you getting fumes ? A rattle in itself is not a big deal. But then I don’t even know where the flexi exhaust is.

As for the shock. If you know which shock can you aim you smart phone camera up the tower and see it it’s very oily and damp ?

I agree with the previous comments: if its a diff seal, any good independent should be able to handle it. The flex section of the exhaust is an issue but I would contact a muffler/exhaust shop, they may know of a way to repair that small section of the system.

If the diff is just 'weeping', i.e., it's barely a wet trace below the seal, that's almost routine on these diffs. Mine has been weeping for 4 years now. I check it annually, and the diff fluid has not dropped one bit. I just wipe it off and keep track of it.

It's an annoying expensive repair also. I was quoted over $1500. That was a dealer price, but with the work they outlined I expect even a good independent would by $600+.

As for exhaust, if it's just a part, a good independent muffler shop is the way to go. I've had bad flex sections swapped out while I waited for less then $150 on my other cars. This all they do and it's amazing how fast and relatively cheaply they can fix things up.

My rear diff (stock; not LSD) had evidence of residue on the surface but it never dripped onto the ground. The dealer also said that it was normal.

I ended up leaving it alone and tuned the car, including the transmission with XHP.

40,000 miles later and it seems fine now.

Rattling exhaust sounds like the easiest fix out of the three. I'd replace the leaking shock though.

My e46 diff weeped up to 386k miles. I'd check the level of fluid every couple of years. Really didn't notice a loss.
