Exactly, I would gladly pay the money to get carplay in...we will see though. Probably not going to see anything related to this until after the new year

N.B. the instructions for CarPlay on manual that downloaded for my 2017 M240i state that WiFi on the vehicle must be on. This would suggest you need the new Wi-Fi hotspot option enabled.

The implementation BMW have done may for "wireless CarPlay" only.

This is ridiculous

A one year hardware difference not enough for a software update?! I'm pretty damn sure that the M235i with the Tech Package has enough hardware to handle the update. Buttons with different labels does not mean new hardware. And even if there was new stuff under the hood, the M235i is pretty well equipped regardless.

Companies like KIA, VW, and Hyundai allow retrofit updates to 2014 models and their hardware sucks. Kind of surreal when the car industry expects you to buy a new car for a software update when companies like Apple don't even expect that on phones.

Can't wait for someone to grab a 2017 VIN and try a retrofit.

I wholeheartedly agree. Based on what I am told, it will require a new FSC code, and a CAN filter installed behind the HU. As of now, not sure which CAN filter, still working on that.

As more cars roll out with iDrive 5.0, I am sure we will see plenty of retrofits...just a bit of a waiting game right now.

An upgrade for a price would be nice. The alternatives described above sound to me like organ theft or grave-robbing. Not for me, especially on a leased car.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind BMW coming out and saying: "Hey iDrive4 owners, here's a list of pre-iDrive5 vehicles that we can upgrade to the new tech. All for a fee of $X."

I'm certain there are others who are willing to splash the cash just to get shiny new tech in their vehicles.

I've heard that the new 5 series is getting iDrive 6.0 (not 100% sure if it was 6.0, I just remember hearing that it's getting a new iDrive)

I also heard that us iDrive 4.2 people will be soon getting, from the Connected store, an app for CarPlay. That'd make retrofitting 5.0 useless.

Actually it wouldn't. While more people here seem to use iOS, there are a lot of us who are on Android for whom iDrive 5.0 should offer us things like a proper Spotify implementation and other goodies that are now only available to 7 series drivers.

This would be amazing and yes I agree it would make idrive 5 less appealing

..Cant you just connect your weird Android phone via USB port and go to ConnectedDrive and open the Spotify app?

nope. ConnectedDrive for Android doesn't support anything but actual music files. No Spotify, no podc*st app, no nothing.

I was really proud of myself for making no anti-Apple comment in my post but you had to go ruin it by calling my phone "weird". Bloody iLemmings

For a fee to add CarPlay, I would most likely go for it. As long as the fee isn't absurdly priced. But it's a BMW, they'll overprice it and we'll still pay for it.

Yes, you are correct. ID6 is the touchscreen version of ID5 which should be offered on the 5/6 series and X5/X6 as far as I know.

The fee on new car orders is $300 so I have to assume it would be that, or not much more. I would definitely pay to have CarPlay.

+1 for someone that would pay $$ to be able to swap up to iDrive 5.x

subscribed. MY16 M2 has old idrive. Would like 5.0 and carplay. I am sufficient with coding and would be willing to attempt this retrofit.

Bimmer-tech has the option to retrofit iDrive 5.0 and Carplay for under $450. As of now, it looks like there are some caveats so I am waiting for some others to do it first but that may be a good option rather than waiting forever for BMW.

ID5 requires a software update, you will need a battery charger and also FSC code for Carplay. The downside is that you will lose BMW Online services and from a software aspect there's nothing we can do about that. 2017 models have new hardware, ATM telematics which even if there was retrofit available for it BMW would never activate it because car did not come with it.

Hello,

What about screen mirroring? I heard that it may not work. What determines that?

Cheers
