Do insurance companies not discriminate between M240i and M2?
I have Geico and I was looking up how much my insurance would go up if I went from my 228i and M240i, and there is no option to choose any of the M-Sport cars on the Geico interface. When I use a VIN, it automatically chooses M2. The premium goes up ~40% with this.

Is "240i" an option?

If you want insurance from AAA, I think you have to use one of their agents.

I just switched insurance co's to save money and same issue. Geico would only call my car (using the vin) an M2 and the rate was high. Progressive called my car "2 series" after I put in the vin and the rate was much lower.

I have Geico and the M2 thing is supposedly a character constraint. The VIN actually does tell them exactly what you have. If you have access to an M2's VIN, you'll see the rate increase higher than your 240m.

A shout-out for independent agents. We sought one out when Amica cancelled our homeowners' insurance. They decided that we were too close to the water. Well, yes, we are less than 200 ft. from the Long Island Sound, but we are also over 100 ft. above it. We ain't gonna flood and it will be a while before the bluff caves in. An agent in town found us not only a homeowners' policy (OK, for an astronomical sum) but also insurance for two BMWs with a reputable company at half what we had been paying. Amica keeps sending us mail asking is to come back, but they still won't insure the house. Go away!

my initial insurance card (Geico) listed the vehicle as "M240i" on subsequent renewals it got changed to "M2".
when I reached out to them I could not get a clear answer other than some lame explanation about character limits (which does not even hold up because they used to show "M240i" before) and a verbal assurance that the premiums were based off the VIN and I should not worry. I work in tech.. so I worry |

Based on all the moronic insurance advertising, I know more companies with whom I would never do business than those I would. On the WTF list from having to listen to their idiocy are:
Guess what, insurance advertising managers? Brand awareness isn't everything!

Great point on those incessant insurance company ads. How do you think they recoup all the money that they are spending on those ads? By charging their customers more!

I bought my '22 M235i two weeks ago, and I have State Farm. At that point, none of the '22 BMW's were in their system yet, so he had to enter it as a '21 and manually override it. He told me the rate was the same for the '21 and the '22.

Geico insurance cars I got until January 2021 correctly stated my car's model as "M240i", but the one I got when I renewed in July 2021 said "M2". So I called them and they eventually emailed me a corrected card that says M240i. But if I log in to the Geico website and print one, it still comes with M2. The manage policy web page too has it wrong. Geico needs to fix this. |

The premium didn't change when they emailed me the corrected card. Despite sending me that one corrected card, they haven't fixed it in their system yet and if I print a new card from the portal it still comes with "M2" on it. Are we being charged M2 rates? Need to figure this out! |

Your experience suggests that they may have eliminated the tier between 2-series and M2 where the M240i belonged, and are now just classifying M240i in the same tier as M2. |

I would get a better quote from a reputable company and send it to your company telling them you are planning to switch and why. I bet you will get a premium reduction. If not, switch. It costs you nothing.

As comparing insurance rates between different drivers in different states is comparing apples to oranges, I have no idea if this data point is useful, but I'm paying $688 this year with AAA. That's for full coverage with a $1K deductible, $250K/$500K liability, and $100K property damage. I also have homeowners and an umbrella policy with AAA.
The last time I compared automobile insurance rates with Geico and Progressive, the former was 31% higher and the latter 26% higher than my then-current AAA rate. The Geico rep did, however, let me know that their claims service was superior. (IOW, pay quite a bit more to an insurance company that wants your claims so it can service them excellently.) I laughed, the commission salesman laughed, and we hung up.
