I daily my M235i 6MT M-Sport and love it! It has had winter tires on it since December but seems like we might have an early Spring in SLC. Hopefully the summer kit will come out soon!

Yes, it gets door dings. And yes, it is covered with a disgusting thick layer of Minnesota salt right now. (So thick you can't read the license plate.) And the LSD is a bit scary on ice.

But it is still the most awesome car I've ever owned, and I WANT to drive it every single day!

I daily'd my 228 for 3.5 years and 89,000+ miles while doing all my own maintenance after 50K miles. Tuned on a BMS stage 1 tune for over 40K of those miles with 8K oil changes. No issues except needing more room and knee problems.

The LSD definitely helps grip, when both wheels have grip. It can still help a lot when only one wheel has grip. And in low traction it can often get you going when a standard diff will struggle.

But, in glare ice conditions, paradoxically, it can be a worse experience than a standard diff with traction control.

The issue is that when one wheel breaks free, all the torque goes to the other wheel, and often it will break free also. Now both wheels are sliding/spinning. In snow this can be great fun. But on glare ice, if there is any crown in the road, the rear of the car immediately starts sliding down the crown and off the road. You no longer have any directional stability. This is especially bad if you are trying to go up a hill.

Traction control off mode makes it worse. (Unlike in snow.) If you leave traction control on, at least the throttle cut keeps the car from just spinning around on you.

With a standard diff, if one wheel breaks free, the other wheel actually loses torque and is more likely to remain stuck to the road. And the brake based traction control will slowly stop the spinning wheel. It's a bit more even in how traction is recovered, and you don't have that sudden slide as both wheels break free.

I still think the LSD is the single best upgrade you can make to this car. But this is my first full winter with it, and it's been a particularly icy year. The vast majority of the time the car is awesome in the snow with winter tires. I usually laugh at the SUV's in the snowbanks. But I had a few white knuckle moments this year and it's still vivid in my memory.

Do you think xdrive cars would have the same problem since if both wheels are breaking free the power would be heading front? I was literally about to order an MP lsd after it warms up but didn't want to bamboozle myself in the winter. I have an xdrive m240.

On glare ice you will just lose grip from all 4 tyres and will be along for the ride with no steering control, depends on how good the winter tyres are to when that happens.

I used to have a Z4M with the ///M LSD that I drove in any weather. When it was really icy I had no problem, but would often watch AWD vehicles sliding into curbs or spin into the centre median on the highway due to what I can only assume is a mixture of over confidence and lack of good winter tyres. Once on a fairly cambered and very icy road I drove up the camber away from a transport truck and several other vehicles, including a couple of AWD SUVs, doing a slow sideways slide locked together into the centre median, just following the camber.

Other than burning through tires pretty quick, its been a lot of fun, with pretty reasonable operating costs as well!

Also, Ive been been lucky and not gotten any door dings. I was rear ended last summer though, with minimal damage to
the rear bumper.
