Depends on compressor demand, compressor can vary it's output hence it can run very efficiently.
When it's cold outside, it will not draw much power (less than 1 hp).
(It can take up to 5~7 hp when it's very hot outside)
Thanks for the great post.

Question: I've read in several different magazines that air conditioning typically draws 1/3 hp, but that's not the greatest source of facts. Is the 5 ~ 7 hp you quoted peak or average draw?

If it's average, then it is a very substantial addition to the power required to maintain a steady highway speed. If it's even half of that on a day when running the AC is optional, it's another excellent reason for me to keep it off.

Power draw from AC compressor is highly varied by ambient condition.

If ambient is about 100F/40%, AC compressor will take about 5~7hp in fresh air mode, continuously.
If AC is left in recirculation mode, then it will take about 2 hp, after cabin cooled down.

If ambient is 70~80F, AC will be mostly stay in fresh air mode and it will take about 0.5~2hp. (again, highly varied by temp and humidity)

1/3 hp is when the ambient is very mild (50~60F).

BTW, car needs about 25~30 hp to maintain highway speed. (~70mph)

I pretty much always leave the car in recirculation mode. Is that a bad thing in general?

It gets more foggy in recirculation mode.
Also, CO2 builds up fairly quickly.
No harm for the car but you may experience some dizziness.

In Auto mode, the system automatically forces the fresh air after some time (varies by manufacturer).

In general, we want to leave in fresh air mode below 80~90F.

I see that he shows “BMW X6” as the vehicle he drives, perhaps he accidentally posted in the wrong forum. I could see the frustration with that vehicle as it is panned by automotive journalists as much as they laud the 2-series.

Me (intending to commiserate): What have you tried to fix the moldy smell coming out of the vents?

Owner of older car: What moldy smell?
You seem to be under the misguided impression that dry weather only exists in Canada. But that doesn't even matter. Get a clue: dry climate does not cause moldy automobile HVAC systems. To be believe otherwise is idiotic. I really wish I could help you with your gross misapprehensions about how things work, but that doesn't seem possible. Oh, well. Just turn on the A/C. Leave it on. Everything will be fine. How silly, trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist. And on that note, I've got this really cool rock that prevents tiger attacks! I'm guessing you'd probably like to buy it, eh?

The only thing I hate about my 2 series is I have to stop driving it when I get to where I'm going. Which is usually work... so I can afford to drive it when I'm not working 🙃 Apple car play being allowed without a nav headunit would have been nice too, but by no means a deal breaker.

This has prolly been said but this is a brilliant idea to help owners be part of a huge Kaizen event that the manufacturers don't pay a cent for.

Really wish they allowed for active sound to be turned off as a setting in iDrive.
Better yet, allow varying the volume and tie it to a user profile.

Can you elaborate? I'm looking to buy one. Can I not use Apple Car Play if I don't have navigation?

Soooo yea I was sort of incorrectly informed by my sales agent that the only thing I needed was the WiFi hotspot package and enhanced BT... To me, what's the point of navigation if I'm just going to use my phones nav anyway...

I purchased the mentioned packages and when the car arrived we couldn't get it to show on the connected drive store. Eventually BMW NA had to be contacted to figure out why, and that's when we found out you also need the nav package....

The nav package uses a different headunit that has more memory and processing power I guess. Bottom line is without nav you get a less capable headunit, and CarPlay along with basically all the other connected drive features don't work. Hard to believe considering the tiny headunit on my wife's Mazda3 and even the econo Hyundai I rented in the keys last summer run car play just fine...

Bmw really dropped the ball by not allowing carplay without nav. That's another $300 they could have got off me. I wasn't going to pay the extra $1500 ish for nav I didn't want just to be able to pay $300 on top for CarPlay. For that matter you would think it would reduce production costs to only use one headunit and display regardless of the package and just don't activate the maps and don't include the gps antenna or what ever if you don't pay for nav.

There are aftermarket mod options available, but they don't seem to play well with the cars factory equipment and require running different mics and such and take away the USB port. I'm waiting for a better option to present itself.

Steering feel is garbage. My job's Jeep Grand Cherokee feels like it even has better steering feel. Sport mode feels extremely artificial/unnecessary.

16mpg city, shifting at 2k.

Hard shifts from 1st to 2nd on a manual will often result in grinding gears.

That's pretty much it. Don't love the car, don't hate it. I was very pumped on owning this car after my 128i, but apart from its looks and exhaust burbles, I'd prefer the 128i honestly.

The electric assist steering is never going to feel like hydraulic. Never. I agree, the Comfort steering does feel more natural. With that said, I rent tons of cars for work and my M235 had stellar steering feel to EVERYTHING I've rented and I've had some decent performance rentals. Most automotive reviews say the steering feel in the 2 series pretty dang good for electric. I have no issues knowing exactly what the front tires are doing.

You MPGs are because you live in busy cities with tons of stop and go. It has a huge impact.

If you're grinding on the 1-2 shift, you're 6MT is on the way out. I strongly suggest not banging the shifts hard until the gear oil is fully warm (about 10-15 minutes of driving after a cold start).

The fact that I have to double push the START/STOP button to turn the car off. Once to turn off the engine, another time to turn off the accessories.
In my 135i I can just long push that button. Why they felt the need to change?

You can code your car so that the headunit/accessories shut off when the driver's door is opened.

One of the first things I did with bimmercode on both cars and my son's car. Almost worth the price for that alone.
