Oil Changes

I keep my cars forever

How often are people changing oil on M235i?

What is the best oil to use (willing to spend more if advisable for long term)

Thanks

EE,

I expect you are going to get a lot of different replies here. I replace the oil every 5K, which is my standard practice and replace the filter using an OEM or similar quality (i.e. Mann) filter. For oil, I use my primary turbocharged car oil, Mobil 1 0W-40, which I have had great luck with over many years.

Since I am in New England, I like using this viscosity since it will flow well at lower temperatures, and when I lived in Upstate NY, we would have a couple of weeks of -20F or colder weather so it was pretty handy. CT is not so cold but I have not altered my practice. I see you are in MA so it is the same climate we have here in NE Connecticut or pretty close.

I buy the filters on-line and go to Walmart for the oil. Their prices are hard to beat. Good luck with your oil change and forum query!

I don't drive the 235 in winter, so 5w-30, as bmw recommends?

Agree on 5,000 or so miles

If the car is still under warranty, it is best to use a BMW approved oil to avoid any denied repairs related to engine failure. Mobil 1 lost it’s BMW approval when they changed formula a few years ago and Redline has never been tested to gain approval. Castrol and BMWs own labelled oils are generally the most readily available oils in North America that meet the approved standards, but there are plenty of other European manufactured oils too, if you can find a supplier.

The required BMW LL standard for approved oils is listed in the owners manual, it is different for N55 engines compared with B58/B46 ones.

One thing we need to remember is that engines with a turbo should run oil that has the API “SN” designation. This says that the oil is designed to properly support turbo health.

I run BMW TPT 0W-30; I change it annually- which translates to @6,000 miles.

I just changed my oil for the first time since buying the car and have a couple notes/thoughts. It was last done at the dealer I bought my car from 4.3kmiles ago but 1.5 years
The reset for the oil service is in the gauge cluster and says 8000k miles or yearly. (Hold down black button on botom left gauge cluster then click to scroll, hold down to select/reset)
I changed my oil with a Mann-Filter HU 816 X ($9) and AmazonBasics Full Synthetic Motor Oil - 5W-40 - Euro Formula - 1 Quart - 6 Pack ($30) then 1qt Castrol full synthetic 5w40 from local store ($10) for the 1/2qt to get to 6.5qt capacity
I read on the forums of guys running 0w40 and sending it to Blackstone for testing and it being a little low viscosity. I drive my 235i pretty hard, don't care about mpg, and plan to send for testing next year or 8000 Miles whichever comes first.
Cheers.

Mixing oils is not the best idea.... and even worst to use non-certified LL-01 oil

"Q: Can i use this on a 2012 bmw 328i convertible?
A: Your car manual states it takes BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 or BMW Longlife-01 or BMW Longlife-01 FE. So neither 0W-20 nor 0W40 would be recommended."

Also during summer/spring 0w40 will have same viscosity as 5w40

Not trying to give you a hard time just some honest advice

Are you really quoting an answer from Amazon question section? Wow okay.. you could have wrote that. ha!
my manual for my 2014 m235i says no where in it " takes BMW high performance SAE 5w 30" so how is this honest?
The thing the manual says is "approved oils: BMW long life, BMW long-life Fe".. then it goes on to say BMW recommends Castrol. As for mixing a 1/2 qt of another api sm/sn/sl oil. The manual even states that "up to one qt can be added of api sm or Superior grade if needed.

Look, if you're in warranty by all means use BMW long-life. I've read a bunch of reviews and watched torture tests on Amazon synthetic oil on YouTube.. my car is not in warranty and don't know what the hell you mean when you say ll-01, other then buy oil from BMW. I bet you dimes to dollars that BMW oil is Castrol synthetic. But Amazon was testing better in torture tests. Which I'm conducting one right now on my car.. I'm also interested in what the results will be when I test it in 7900 miles.
You're right on viscosity but it gets cold here in pennsyltucky..
Botom line is, other then the weird Amazon quote you are correct, BMW only suggest using BMW oil and it's not suggested to mix oils. Me, not my first rodeo.. cheers!

The quote was just to show the Amazon oil is not LL-01 approved

LL is Long Life
LL-01 is the standard that BMW requires for their oil....
You can buy any oil brand you want as long as it meets the standard....

So if the oil isn't LL-01 or LL-FE approved then it doesn't meet some of the requirements that BMW engineers designed the engine for....
I don't care how many youtube videos you watched, I'm sure they didn't test that oil on the N55 engine and what happened after an extended period of time

Of course if you are in the middle of nowhere and you get a low oil warning sure add whatever oil you can get....

But buying 6 quarts of one type of oil and mixing it with another quart just because it's silly

If you want go ahead and put olive oil and do another torture test....

For the 2016 models, BMW started requiring LL-01 0W-30 (tag on my hood notes the same). Prior it was 5W-30. Either should be fine for a car that spends most of it's life on the street (not track) and is driven in 0 to 110 degree climates.

My car is still under the free maintenance and BMW will do one oil change per year or approximately every 10K miles. I change the oil myself at around 5K-6K miles with the LL-01 0W-30 which I buy as a kit from one of the numerous BMW online vendors for ~$90. This price isn't terrible considering the oil meets BMW specs and is fully synthetic, comes with an OEM filter and O-rings, and drain bolt washer. Buying a quart of most any synthetic in a store will run you $10+ and remember, this motor takes nearly 7 QTs so $90 isn't bad at all. Doing the change yourself is crazy easy too.

I've done two used oil analysis (UOAs) over the years. One change was oil with approximately 6K miles and on a relatively new 10K mile motor and then oil with around 5K miles on it and with about 25K miles on the motor. There was still plenty of additive left, metals were really low, and there was nothing else concerning. The one thing I did note was viscosity was starting to come down and I think within another 2K to 3K miles it would have been out of spec. That tells me that I should change the oil every 6k to 7K miles to be safe. I drive fairly hard and wring out the motor often and drive about 50% city and 50% highway. I live in a climate that can have sub zero temps or 105 temps. I think it's fair to say my car is under somewhat severe use.

Based on my experience, I see no reason to go with another oil brand or grade considering costs and my own data.

LiquiMoly 5W30 here in the NW for me. Pick your weight depending on weather and make sure it's LL01. Also look into ordering from FCPEuro for lifetime replacement oil and filters.

Car is still under warranty and I drive it less than 7K per year. I change the oil every six months, warranty service by the dealer and intermediate service by a local indy shop. With summer approaching, I am using 5-40W and with our mild winters 5-30W mostly BMW oil but my indy shop recommended the new Kendall GT-1 full synthetic.

This whole DIY oil-change business is amazingly reliable clickbait.
The last car I changed oil on regularly was my wife's 1970 VW bug, religiously every 3000 miles. It's still in the garage. I think she is too, though I have not looked lately.

Yes, it is. Bob is the Oil Guy is the place to go when you want to get serious about oil - too serious in my estimation. IIRC, the fellow who runs Blackstone answers with the following when asked which oil he uses, "Whatever is on sale."

I had a delightful gf with a Bug who was good at giving orders. When we got together, and knowing that I maintained my Volvo Amazon, she said "You can take care of my car, too." I said "Okay." Then I lifted the Bug to start on a tune-up, took a hard look at it, and decided paying someone else to work on that thing was the smart move for me.

BMW does not recommend 0W-40 or 5W-40 oils for the N55/S55/B58 engines.

Currently recommended oil for the N55/S55/B58 engines is BMW TwinPower Turbo Longlife-01 FE 0W-30 (p/n 83212365950) with the alternative less "recommended" oil being BMW TwinPower Turbo Longlife-01 5W-30 (p/n 83212466454).

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...engine/1PSryV8

Interestingly, according to the chart linked above, BMW does not "recommend" the 0W-30 over 5W-30 for the B58 like it does the N55/S55, however, in my M240i Owner's Manual there is conflicting info which states 0W-30 as the "suitable" engine oil type with the alternative being 5W-30:

"Alternative engine oil types
If an engine oil suitable for continuous use is not available, up to 1 US quart/liter of an engine oil with the following oil rating can be added:

Oil rating

BMW Longlife-01.

API SL, API SM, or API SN."

Although my post above states that BMW does not recommend 0W-40 or 5W-40 oils, it should be noted and clarified that it does not currently recommend them. Below is a list of past BMW-approved LL-01 oils, which do include a few 0W-40 and 5W-40 oils:

Curious if you track junkies out there are sticking to BMW recommended LL-01 FE 0W-30 for track use or if you are using something else based on past experiences, pro advice, hearsay, etc.

I changed the oil in my M240i for the first time last week in preparation for a HPDE track event this past weekend. Changed it myself in the garage and it was super easy. Car only had 2500 miles on it, but was still running the original oil from a year ago when I took delivery of the car. The "perform engine oil service" indicator just came on a couple of weeks ago, obviously due to the time that had gone by rather than actual mileage. I just don't drive it much...

Anyways, I went with the recommended BMW LL-01 FE 0W-30. Now I'm wondering if this is providing enough protection under track conditions, but I suppose I have no reason to doubt BMW knows what is best for their own engines. After all, the oil temp only varied less than +9 degrees F from normal operating temp. If they've managed to keep oil temp this under control even under track conditions, what advantage would running a thicker oil really have? I'm thinking none... What say you guys?

This whole DIY oil-change business is amazingly reliable clickbait.
The last car I changed oil on regularly was my wife's 1970 VW bug, religiously every 3000 miles. It's still in the garage. I think she is too, though I have not looked lately.
