I bought a 2015 cpo 228i xdrive a few weeks back that came with 205/50 17s on it. They're horrible, obviously. Having spent the better part of two weeks searching these forums, emailing Apex, and googling, I've only seen TRMotorsports being talked about with 245/40s.
My question to the community is: has anyone tried going with a 17 x 8.5 wheel? The TR wheel is 17x 8 et40, if I tried 17x8.5 how much offset would I be looking for without getting into spacers and camber plates?

I've got a set of 17" BBS SR wheels I've been thinking about selling. PM if interested I got them with DWS06 for my M235.

My plan is to get Bimmerworld TE:AL 17x8.5et40 with small spacers (5mm?...so et35) and 245/40 MP4S or DZII when my current MPSS wear thin. I think it’ll fit, but I’m prepared to upgrade to SPL adjustable camber arms and tension struts when (if ever?) they become available and camber is needed to tuck them into the fenders.

I think another user had a similar 17x8.5 setup with an expensive set of one-off custom order Kosei rims in another thread about 17’s like years ago.

Thanks. Found that 17 thread when googling. Trying to stay away from spacers, though 5mm isnt that big. The email response from Apex recommended having 3 - 5mm spacers on hand if I tried their 17x8.5 et40. Couldn't guarantee direct fit.i may just get a set a arc8 18s. Running a set of them on my 3series currently and I like them.

Yeah, this car is in a weird spot for wheels/tires. Few manufacturers make a 245mm/18” sport tire; the fenders are too narrow to fit square 255mm/18” without significant suspension work; the 235mm/18 square setup is a step down for rear tire width from the factory sport package; and while there are plenty of 245mm/17” sport tires on the market, there are not a lot of appropriately sized 17x8.5” wheels with correct offsets to mount them to.

Sorry, this maybe off topic a bit but I can't create a new thread yet. I noticed this started out with 205/50 17s. I currently have 225/40 18s. I've had over 10 flats now since February (thanks to tire insurance I am not broke). The roads where I live are very bad and even though its late summer I have to watch where and how I drive. When I talk to others that own 3 series with 225/45 18s they have not had very many flats at all. As such I was wondering if switching to 205/50 17s would provide any relief or is switching out of run flats a better option even on the 18s (though I drive on the interstate since that is better maintained I've been wondering if a non runflat flat tire on interstate would give me enough time to get to a place I can stop)

A larger sidewall may protect your wheels and maybe a small amount of protection from flats. Going from 40 to 45 isn't a huge jump. Keep the insurance.
