I have found to my happy surprise how much more efficient in terms of gas use is the car with 98 Octane compared to 95 Octane petrol. It's more than pay for the extra cost of 98 Octane

It might be surprising and unbelievable but I am now getting 100miles more per full tank on Octane 98 compared to 95 (2 more round trips to work of 50 miles) This is only in the past week so I need to watch further but there is no doubt the car has much better mpg with 98 Octane petrol

Octane numbers posted at the pump in other countries (e.g. Britain, Europe, etc) are not the same as those posted in North America (U.S. & Canada).
In Britain/Europe they use RON (Research Octane Number) which is determined by running the fuel in a test engine with a variable compression ratio under controlled conditions at 600 rpm engine speed.
There's another type of octane rating, called MON (Motor Octane Number), is determined at 900 rpm engine speed instead of the 600 rpm.
Although there's no direct link between RON & MON, the octane rating for MON is generally about 8 to 12 octane lower than the RON.
In North America, gas pumps post the average of the 2 (i.e. (RON + MON)/2). This is also known as PON (Posted Octane Number).
Ergo, the octane shown at the pumps in in Canada and the United States is 4 to 6 octane numbers lower than elsewhere in the world for the same fuel.
So your Shell V-Power octane 91 in California or here in Ontario, Canada, is probably the same as the Shell V-Power octane 97/98 in England.

95 octane in the UK is roughly equal to 91 in the US and 98 octane equal to 93 octane US.

Another fun fact: The UK uses imperial gallons which are ~21% larger than a US gallon so you can't correlate what someone sees MPG wise in the UK vs the US.

That MPG is really below because:

1) You're doing a ton of stop and go driving
2) NY has terrible fuel (heavily oxygenated)
3) You've got xdrive
4) You're likely doing lots of sub 10 mile commutes which means the motor and oil rarely get up to operating temp.

You'd see closer to 27-30mpg if you took the car out on a 300 mile 70mph cruise.

Also worth noting is that an engine's octane requirement is lowered as altitude is gained. One rule of thumb is approx. 1.0 RON of reduction for every 2,000 feet of increase in elevation.

My Onboard is showing 11.1 liters per 100Km (which is equal to 21.19 MP U.S. gallon or 25.45 MP Imp gallon).
Speed 38.4 KmPH (23.86 MPH).

I average 27.5 mpg with my 19' M240i xDrive. I've got an 80 mile commute M-F which is made up 40% back roads 60% highway. I've gotten as high as 33mpg one way and that was just driving normal. I actually use Sport + for the twisty backroads but just drive normally if that makes sense. I'd probably do slightly better using Eco Pro but just hate the way it deadens the gas pedal. A lot of just comes down to distance and driving style. I tend to accelerate gradually rather then lay into it which I think helps mpg a bit.

In the warmer months, I tend to see 21-22 mpg overall with my M235 6MT (downpipe only). I'm not light on the throttle either. I do about 50/50 city and highway driving. Lots of hills, lots of Midwest head and cross winds, etc. I tend to drive about 20-30 miles per day. In straight highway cruising at 75-80 mph, I've seen as high as 30 mpg. I'm almost always in the Sport throttle setting.

In the winter months and with winter gas, I'm usually seeing around 20 mpg overall and 27 mpg is straight highway cruising.

I wasn't complaining on the gas mileage. I was just sharing mine. I have tons of fun with my car. I use 93 either Shell or Sunoco only.
