traction control
On 2016 M235i, I was trying to do some car control practice (snowy parking lot), sliding the rear around a 'skidpad'. I had some trouble doing this, with the stability control seemingly limiting wheelspin in 'comfort' and 'sport' settings. Do I need to be a bit more aggressive in these settings, or do I need to select 'sport +' instead?
I have no trouble doing this in the 128i with a WaveTrac although without a single press of the traction button, there can be throttle reduction/intervention.

Sport+ allows a small amount of spin before pulling power and braking wheels. DTC single press allows for a bit more slip but still brakes your wheels. You will need to hold the DTC button for 3 seconds to allow for full slip.
Basically the same as the 1 series, ignore the sport/comfort BS for what you want to do here. Beware curbs and light poles, and any local trespassing laws. |

Yes, always cautious. But, as the M235i is new to me, where is the DTC button? Is it embedded in the i-drive (I couldn't find it there, but that is new to me)?

Ah, I'll look for it next time, if I decide to buy the car. I've taken it out for a short (standard) test on a rainy evening, then had the opportunity to look at it on a lift before a drive on snowy roads (read: low friction). The car is good, but I think I like my 128i better (see my mods list).
Is this the button just forward (closer to the dashboard) of the switch for changing the Adaptive Suspension setting?

see pics (disregard the ad)
https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1415109 I came from a similarly modded e90 330i. The 2 series drives more numb especially in stock form.. the biggest down side would be the electronic steering rack. Of course suspension can be modded as you choose, but the rack isn't really an option. |

Thank you very much for the image and confirming. Tough decision. I think I have a 'knowing' buyer for my car. Trade value nowhere near what the car is worth to someone who understands, which certainly is not 'everyone'!

If needed, these are the instructions from the 2017 M240i manual. I'm guessing they're the same for the M235i.

This is one of the handful of things that really disappoints me about this car. Can't have Traction mode (DSC off, DTC on) at the same time as Sport mode. Traction mode sets the chassis and drivetrain to Comfort settings so softer suspension and steering. It is kind of lame really.

They're also handy when it's 30 degrees out, dry, and I'm running my winter tires (read: Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+) while turning the wheel with more than a little throttle input. This car's nannies have shown me that I need to be more judicious with the throttle that I've had to be with every other street car I've owned. Turn DSC OFF on and you can have all the fun you want, especially if you've installed an LSD. Significant negative camber helps, too.

Interesting. I didn't realize that changing the DTC status would also change Adaptive Suspension back to Comfort settings. Thanks, no thanks.

My coilovers permanently solved that issue.

"Sport+" is stiff shocks, stiff steering, and Sport throttle and nannies dialed back to allow for some spin and slide. "Traction" is soft shocks, soft steering, Comfort throttle, and nannies dialed back to allow for some spin and slide. "DSC Off" is stiff shocks, stiff steering, Comfort throttle, nannies off, and electronic LSD on. ECO and Comfort modes are terrible. Don't know why anyone would drive this car in those setttings IMO, if you have a mechanical LSD, Sport+ is the best mode for fun street driving and DSC Off for the track if you're a solid driver. Otherwise, stick with Sport+. I am astounded by how much better performing and riding my M235 is with a 245/35R18 square tire setup, a mechanical LSD, Dinan springs and OEM shocks in the front, and Bilstein B6s Damptronics in the back with stock springs.

You cannot use the stock rims. You need at least a 8" wide rim and the proper offset. I'm running an 18x8 rim with a 43mm offset and it fits perfectly with no rubbing on the stock springs and for the past 2 years on Dinan springs.

Yeah, I know how it works. My last three BMWs were all manuals and I get that urge sometimes, but it is not really necessary just to kick the tail out now and then in the snow. Traction+Sport mode together would be so much better. I think Sport+ assumes you are going to shift manually which is why it holds the revs much longer.
