Oiling Mods?

I see that there is a potential for oil starvation. More so with R compound tires.

I have read that some have done an extensive ($$$) replacement of the oiling system with M2 parts. Has anyone looked at just doing an MMR baffle or the like? Perhaps the complete "M2" oiling system is not needed.

Also, I have seen some owners adding 1/2 quart overfill of oil? What is that based on?

Maybe all it needs is a deep oil sump with baffles, like the MMR?

Some engines are starved for oil under certain circumstances. I haven't heard of oil starvation in the B58 engine. I have read reports of oil starvation in the N55 engine, though. A baffled oil pan is the way to go, though adding 1/2 quart of oil can help.

There is plenty of room for overfilling in both N20 and N55 engines. So far so good over here and I run 245 square RS4 tires. Definitely not a bullet proof solution but better than nothing. Baffled pan + overfull would be enough on a street car running semi slicks. Things get dicey when adding camber adjustments, sway bars, etc.

Found this post. It looks expensive. I wonder if the baffle is adequate? Im not building a race car, just a car that will be autoX'd and tracked occasionally. This stuff is expensive, and I would be reluctant to install a used oil pump;

ttp://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...20Racing&mg=11

you will need following parts:

01 Suction pump 1 11417846385
02 Drive Shaft 1 11417848466
05 Cover lid FOR RETURN LINE 1 11418335879

01 Oil pump 1 11418011851
02 Suction pipe 1 11417846384

01 Oil Pan 1 11137854463

I bought used oil pan, suction pump and oil pump from M4. Also you need cover lid FOR RETURN LINE that you can order from the dealer. That part is used on M235R racing version. All those parts exactly the same as M235R cup, so you don't need to make modifications to retrofit them. Right now I have no problem with the engine so far.

It seems that very little is inexpensive about our cars – unless you're in the P-car and up bracket, I suppose.

There is at least one much more extensive thread on this that would be worth finding and reading through. This appears to be a bigger concern if you are tracking heavily, and on tracks with longer high-g turns. I doubt autocross will have prolonged g-loads that would result in oil starvation, but I'm not an engineer (many have tracked extensively w/o blowing an engine, so it isn't a hand grenade). And the cheaper solution seems to be an accusump, anything else (baffling, deeper pans) is kind of iffy, and still quite expensive.

Does anyone make an aftermarket oil pan? I found a company called Massive. However, I have not found anyone else.

Unfortunately there is nothing about the effectiveness of the baffles that are available.

I would think that the engines require more than a baffle. The BMW engineers made the "race" version of this engine with much more than a baffle.

How much do you add? and how often... like per/event?

Cause the meter will only show you are full but not how much over filled you are....

Question: I thought the oil measurement did include overfill?

It looks like my oil measurement has room to go above max level. However, I’m not sure.

I have not seen mine change. I think my last oil change drained about 5.0 litres. It should have shown a lower level???

I just received this from the maker of the MMR baffle:

"We have had no starvation issues with it, we have sold over 200 worldwide for many different applications, Drifting, Racing, Road Use and all are fine."

I hope they do not mind me quoting them? However, we are looking for the best direction.

I may get the MMR baffle.

After constantly changing my mind, I ordered the MMR.

Cost won out. It looks like a good product. Part of the rationale is that my car is not a 450 hp plus race car. It will be a 320 hp track car.

From MMR;

"We have had no starvation issues with it, we have sold over 200 worldwide for many different applications, Drifting, Racing, Road Use and all are fine."

"We have a few sump baffles being use on time attack cars and we always use it in our development M135i that is used on track"

Also, he said it works with R compounds (ie Hoosier).

For those looking for an N20 sump baffle solution Navardi has just started selling one. There have been options for our 6 cylinder members for some time, just wanted to drop this in here for the rest of us.

Car calls for 5.2 quarts, my shop puts 5.7 quarts of 5w-40 in every change during track season at 2 - 3k mile intervals, depending. — off season, back to 5.2 quarts 5w-30 every 5k miles.

Sorry for the lengthy reply time, didn’t see this till today!

Was trying to do the quart to liter conversion but didn’t make sense. In terms of liters is the additional amount about half a liter? Also did your shop mention any major negatives to overfilling when not track driving? Does the excess oil need to be drained out right after the track day?

A quart and a liter are almost exactly the same (1Q=.95L), not worth splitting hairs.

I overfill by almost an entire quart and have had zero issues. No draining excess between track days. I will likely continue to overfill even with the baffled sump.

Wow is the oil pan removal a head ache.

I thought I would ask the dealer for a quote as I do not have the tool to lift the engine. They quoted 8 hours labour = $1500 CAD.

I have ordered the engine support tool.

Its kind of a big project to do on jack stands. I found if you set your engine support bar over the alternator and hang the engine from the 2 bolts on top of it the engine wont move at all when you unbolt the mounts.
